THE GALES

Same last name — different routes to teaching new generations of students.

“I often reflect back on the influential people in my life, and many of them are educators,” said Monsignor McCoy High School math teacher Nick Gale, who alongside his twin brother Nathan and wife Laura have become teachers within Medicine Hat. “I work hard to try and be that for students.”

Nick attended the Medicine Hat College from 2000-2002 school years, and then attended the University of Lethbridge to complete his degree in a B. Ed and a B. Science, majoring in Mathematics, followed by a Masters Degree from Gonzaga University.

CONGRATULATES

Nick Gale, his wife Laura Gale, and twin brother Nathan Gale all attended Medicine Hat College and now teach in Medicine Hat schools. Nick teaches at McCoy High School, Laura Gale teaches at River Heights and Nathan teaches at Crestwood Elementary School.

“The program at MHC provided me the opportunity to be in the classroom immediately,” said Nick. “Those early experiences reassured me that Education was the career I wanted to pursue.”

For Nathan, teaching was a second career.

"I was toiling away at working in the trades, and it just wasn't something I enjoyed,” he explained. “I coached football for a number of years, and something I had always enjoyed was working with the kids. So it seemed logical.”

He headed back to school at the age of 25 — already married, with a house and family.

“Having the program (at MHC) made it a viable option for me, (I) got to meet my boss and principal right now who was one of my teachers at that point.”

Graduating in 2012, Nathan now teaches Grade 5 at Crestwood School.

Meanwhile Laura teaches Kindergarten at River Heights Elementary, but like Nathan returned to MHC to pursue teaching as a second career and graduated in 2010.

“This program allowed me to remain a part of the community in which I hoped to work after graduation,” Laura said. “The relationships I built during my time at the college, with instructors, mentors, fellow students, and within Medicine Hat's educational community, have proved enduring and important.”

And the exciting part of teaching, she explained, is having tomorrow’s grown-ups in her classroom — learning how to solve problems, be responsible for themselves, take care of each other, think critically and creatively and work together.

“I love hearing a child say ‘I did it!’ and knowing that their confidence in themselves as a learner just increased,” she said. “I also love that teaching is so well suited to collaboration — I am a better teacher because of the fantastic educators who work with me.”

"You think that because you have a schedule, every day should be the same. It never is,” said Nathan. “Whenever you come into the class, you've got 26 kids and you never know what you're going to walk in to.”

It’s connecting with all these students which is the challenging —but rewarding —part of the job, he said.

“I love the students,” said Nick. “High school students bring such an incredible energy to my life. I count myself fortunate to play a role, small as it may be, during a time in their lives when they transition to adulthood.”

Education is also a field that’s always changing, he added, with new and different ways to arrange a classroom, prepare lessons, or integrate technology.

“When we were kids, it was phenomenal to have a DOS computer in the classroom,” said Nathan. “Now I have a smartboard and a projector and I can pull up a video from Youtube.”

"It's going to be interesting in 10 years to see what things are going to be like." ■ OUR COMMUNITIES ■ OUR REGION ■ OUR PEOPLE | 93
