The City of Medicine Hat is ranked amongst Alberta’s top employers and is frequently applauded for excellent financial management of its municipal affairs. Medicine Hat always ranks high amongst Canada’s most livable cities. The City of Medicine Hat has tangible assets worth over $2 billion and an


operating budget of approximately $340 million annually. Medicine Hat has often attracted capital investment by major international companies which have long-standing interests and holdings in the city. The City of Medicine Hat finances many amenities to local residents such as the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre, the Family Leisure Centre and the Medicine Hat Arena among other well regarded facilities.

It remains Canada’s largest catalogue ordering company, and exclusive brand names Kenmore and Craftsman remain popular choices for Canadian hardware and appliance buyers. Until January 2013, Sears Canada Inc. was a major stakeholder in the Medicine Hat Mall. The Medicine Hat Sears supports various local organizations and groups on an ongoing basis and sponsors the Sears National Kids Cancer Ride.

The Medicine Hat Lodge Resort opened in the city in 1990. It has a variety of hospitality services on site— including banquet rooms, the Casino by Vanshaw and a large waterpark. The Medicine Hat Lodge is owned by the Pechet family’s Stagewest Hospitality. Stagewest Hospitality manages 14 resorts and other properties across Canada and in California, and has produced


more than 1,000 theatre shows and concerts in its 70-year history. The Medicine Hat Lodge often donates services and the use of its facilities to Medicine Hat charitable causes and is especially involved with the Medicine Hat Kiwanis and Lions Club.

Medicine Hat College is a comprehensive community college serving southeast Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan. It offers 30 diploma courses and 25 university transfer programs. It has about 2,500 students at its Medicine campus and another 200 at its campus in Brooks. The Medicine Hat College Rattlers


compete in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference. The College maintains its own student housing complex near its Medicine Hat campus and has capital assets estimated at around $87 million. Medicine Hat College students contribute greatly to the cultural and social life of the community and the college maintains strong relationships with local employers with many of its programs geared toward southeast Alberta industry needs. It was established as a college in 1965.

The Medicine Hat School District No. 76 was founded in 1886 to serve the needs of students in the Medicine Hat area. The district has 6,843 students currently enrolled in its 15 schools and alternative education programs, and has an annual operating budget of just under $80 million. It is Medicine Hat’s


main provider of education and has a very significant presence in the social life of the community. Students and staff raise large sums for various charitable causes and engage in significant volunteer work in the community.

The Medicine Hat Regional Hospital is Medicine Hat’s largest single employer and the main facility for broader health care needs in southeast Alberta. It encompasses all acute health care services from 24-hour emergency,


to disease treatment, community health, surgical, physio-care and medical diagnostic services. The Medicine Hat Regional Hospital has 190 acute care beds and 135 long-term care beds. There are 78 physicians practising in this area. It services a


population of over 117,000. The regional hospital has operated in Medicine Hat in some form since 1890.

The Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education has operated in Medicine Hat since 1911. It now administers to 10 schools in Bow Island and Medicine Hat and has 2,800 students.
