Since the NRDC acquisition, The Bay is now considered part of the upscale U.S. retail network the Lord and Taylor line. The Bay has been at its current location at the Medicine Hat Mall for over 30 years as one of the founding franchises. It continues to be a significant anchor to the mall to this day. The Medicine Hat HBC regularly donates products and cosmetic gift baskets to various local organizations and groups.

The Canadian Pacific Railway is a signature corporation in western Canada with a history deeply entwined with Medicine Hat and its surrounding communities. It is a major employer in the area. The CP Rail Board of Directors came through an interesting proxy battle with U.S. stakeholders Pershing Square Capital Management in 2012. This has ushered in dramatic changes to


the historic company’s corporate structure which will be felt locally in 2013. The CP railyard is an essential transport conduit for most major employers in the Medicine Hat area. Every December the CP Rail Holiday Train makes a stop in Medicine Hat which greatly benefits the Medicine Hat Food Bank.

Canadian Tire started operations in Hamilton, Ont. in 1934, and now has a presence in every mid-sized and large community in Canada offering a wide diversity of hardware, automotive and retail products and services. It’s well-known for giving out Canadian Tire Money which many customers donate back


to support local charities. The current Medicine Hat Canadian Tire location opened in 2008. Canadian Tire supports many local organizations with donations of products or services. Its national Jump Start program benefits the Medicine Hat Family YMCA.

The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company is North America’s leading supplier of tires and sells its products world-wide. Goodyear operates 53 rubber plants in 22 countries. The Medicine Hat Goodyear plant has operated in Medicine Hat since 1960 and is the leading manufacturing employer in the city. Tires produced at the Medicine Hat plant are sold


throughout North America and the Pacific Rim. The Goodyear plant gears its donations toward Medicine Hat groups and initiatives exclusively. Local groups such as the Medicine Hat Boy and Girl Scouts, Minor Hockey and many other Medicine Hat charitable causes and organizations receive support from Goodyear and its employees on an ongoing basis.

There are three McDonald’s franchises in Medicine Hat. McDonald’s is by far the best known global restaurant franchise with a presence in nearly every country in the world. McDonald’s Corporation reported


$27.6 billion in earnings in 2012 and continues to expand its


world-wide operations in 2013. McDonald’s is also becoming widely known for its global Operation Smile campaign which provides corrective surgery to hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged kids with cleft palates. Locally Ronald McDonald Houses in Red Deer, Calgary and Edmonton help Medicine Hat families with sick children keep their expenses down during prolonged hospital stays in those cities.

There are three Safeway locations in Medicine Hat. Collectively they are one of the city’s largest private employers. Safeway expanded into Canada in 1929 and now provides groceries and fuel in every mid-sized and large community across the country. Safeway is a significant corporate donor in every


community where it operates. In Medicine Hat, Safeway employees sponsor various events and charities in the community, but are best known for the annual Safeway Walk for Muscular Dystrophy and for supporting for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month with local fundraising efforts.
