Expansion helps to overcome limitations at regional hospital
By GILLIAN SLADE C
onstruction activity on the new wing for Medicine Hat Regional Hospital has only just begun but staff are already excited
about the finished project they’re visualizing in 3D.
“You can’t help but be excited,” said Linda Iwasiw, vice-president of acute care for Alberta Health Services (AHS) who has been involved in all the planning. “Without enough physical space there have been limitations.”
“The buildings don’t wear out but the functionality does,” said Cal Niebergall ,clinical liaison for major capital projects AHS.
The manner in which health care is delivered has changed over the years. The volume of medical equipment has increased taking up a lot of space.
The largest current operating room in 32 sq. m. The new ones will be 64 sq. m., said Niebergall.
The entire fourth floor of the new wing is devoted to surgical services including recovery rooms.
“We’ll have six large operating rooms equipped for general anesthetic and the latest technological equipment,” said Linda Tessmann-Potvin, director surgical services/ambulatory care AHS.
“There will be more equipment attached to the ceilings that can be pulled down as needed,” explained Dr. Vince DeNinno, the hospital's associate medical director.
On the third floor patients having day surgery will be accommodated in different operating rooms. These will be less intimidating for people needing simple procedures.
A large surgical sterilization unit for the entire hospital will be located in the basement with elevators dedicated to transporting sterilized equipment directly to operating rooms.
