Champion of southeast Alberta, MP LaVar Payne forging ahead to maintain rural way of life By TIM KALINOWSKI
Member of Parliament for Medicine Hat Lavar Payne is a self-confessed political junky. He’s been involved with politics in Alberta for a number of years. For most of those years he has been a behind-the-scenes guy: Working on riding boards, serving as a community liaison for the candidate, or working as a campaign manager come election time. As a former banker, human resources manager and employment consultant, Payne’s behind-the-scenes role was one he always relished and excelled at. However with the surprising resignation
of his predecessor and friend long-time MP Monte Solberg four years ago, Payne suddenly found himself thrust into the centre of the political arena when Solberg nominated him as the man to take his place.
It took some soul searching before Payne finally agreed to put his name on the ballot, but four years later, with a few elections now under his belt, he is quite glad he did.
