Who is...Drew Barnes cont.
in what they want to succeed at. So I was talking to my kids about that: Keep your options open, and pick something that you like to do.”
Such options extend even, in Drew’s mind, to what political party his sons might support in the future. He hopes they will follow in his path and pick the small “c” conservative values he and his wife believe in, and ultimately choose to vote for the Wildrose Alliance in future provincial elections. But if they don't, he hopes his sons will find some philosophy to hold to firmly, and have their life choices guided by those principles. Drew encourages his sons to explore their ideas and hopes other young people do the same.
Cypress Medicine Hat MLA Drew Barnes, his wife Frances, and their dog Java, enjoy a walk along the East Glen trail system in January.
“It's an interesting time for them because the two oldest are now in university in Victoria and are very much feeling their way about. One's in business and the other is headed toward business, he thinks — he's not sure yet, but that's what universities are for. I tell them the same thing I tell anybody: When you make a choice, you better believe in it and give it your best effort. We are very fortunate in Alberta and in Cypress-Medicine Hat. There's a lot of opportunity to find a career you can succeed in. And if it's a difference you want to make in people's lives, there's opportunities to do those things too. One just has to go do it.” ■
