Magee introduces Debbie Shaw, who administers the wing. Shaw says that Alfred Egan Home is an essential part of the package of health services offered in the Bow Island area.

“Alfred Egan Home is important in the respect that it provides a level of care that, if it wasn’t here, would mean some people would be placed in long-term care where they wouldn’t be with their peers necessarily,” explains Shaw.

Magee goes in for a quick visit with Alfred Egan Home’s caregivers to check in and see how they are doing. Everything is good today; the residents seem quite happy despite the nasty weather outside. Magee says her farewells. She has a 175-employee facility to oversee and there are never enough hours in the day.

Back in Medicine Hat, Nan Maclean sits in her office answering questions about the importance of the health centre. The Bow Island Health Foundation has existed since the days when Bow Island had its own local hospital board. Its mandate is to help raise money for essential equipment for the health centre. Maclean is the current chair.

“If we didn’t have the Bow Island hospital it would hurt the whole (40

Mile) area,” states Maclean. “And it’s an important part of the economic and social life of the community as well. I know we’ll fight tooth and nail to make sure we keep our hospital.”

A few days later Bow Island mayor Gordon Reynolds is speaking on the phone about that very point. He says Bow Island passed through a period of uncertainty the last decade or so, but he is encouraged now with the hospital expansion that the Bow Island Health Centre will be around for many years to come. He says residents know how fortunate they are to have such a facility in their area.

Nan MacLean is chair of the Bow Island and District Health Foundation.

“The biggest thing in health care, beyond the bricks and mortar,” states Reynolds, “are the people in those facilities: Doctors, nurses, LPNs, aides, cleaning staff, dietary people... And it’s absolutely fantastic the group of people we have working there. And you can always count on them to look after you when you need them.” ■
