build ... will an

Event Centre ever be built?

he largest project in City of Medicine Hat’s history may as well be the longest talked about.

But those pushing the process of

building a $61.4 million Event Centre in Medicine Hat — a replacement major spectator arena for hockey and concerts — see the end in sight.

There’s a land agreement: The City signed an agreement in November to locate the 6,500-seat arena in the Box Springs Business Park on the west side of town.

There are designs in the works: A short-list of three companies will

present plans in the spring.

And there’s some indication about cost and how to cover it: A $61.4 million building and about $8.5 million for related costs are likely to be covered through a combination of reserve funds.

The entire plan still needs to be approved, a step that’s likely to come before Medicine Hat City Council sometime this spring, but its a long way from the initial idea nine years ago, or the winding, often cantankerous debate that’s dogged the project ever since.

“We’re dealing with three companies now and if they can come back with something that fits for the $61 million, I think council will support it,” said Mayor Norm Boucher, who predicts final designs will come before council in May.
