This includes drinking and driving awareness projects, adopting families from the Women’s Shelter to support over Christmas, putting together hygiene kits for the local Salvation Army’s shelter, or collecting mittens and coats for families in need. One year they sent close to 1,000 books to the Philippines to help start a library, and this past Christmas they raised $400 to help care for “Rockstar,” an older dog being cared for through the Save Old Souls project.
They also volunteer with bigger Kiwanis projects, such as volunteer at the annual Kiwanis Christmas brunch, or helping to collect pedal bikes to send to Africa as part of another Kiwanis project.
Participating students range from being in Grade 7 to 12, with older students mentoring younger students and anywhere from 15 to 30 students participating throughout the school year.

disabilities, supporting the food bank, Lions Eye Bank, Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation, student scholarships — the list could go on. Also supporting the community, is the Elks Lodge, the Order of Royal Purple, or Moose Lodge No. 1073 who sponsor and support local sports teams and sports facilities.
For Seiler, the most amazing experience so far has been PACE Rotary’s launch of the Dragonboat festival in Medicine Hat in 2012.
“We all took a big risk, and we had a huge payoff,” she said, with around 400 people attending the festival. “We’re doing it again this summer, and it just feels like ‘We did that! We did that!’
It’s just amazing.”
Taking this sort of chance, taking the lead, is something Seiler encouraged.
When your children are watching you volunteer, and making that a priority in your life, they grow up to believe that that’s what they’re supposed to do.
“I think they get the idea that to be successful in today’s world they need to look bigger than themselves, and all of the kids who tend to work with us tend to be the kids who look outside themselves to help other people,”said McCaig.
It’s an addition to the many projects that the three local Kiwanis clubs — Medicine Hat Kiwanis, Gas City Kiwanis and Golden K — already bring to the area — from the annual Kiwanis Science fair, supporting local athletics and youth activities, Communities in Bloom, the “Best Kept Block & Residence Award,” scholarships and much more.
Wherever there’s a need, the Lions Clubs are there — providing Hatters with annual events like the Canada Day Pancake Breakfast, or the Christmas Hayride. They’ve helped fund renovations to the children’s park in Strathcona Island Park for children with
“Instead of waiting for something to happen around you, being inspired and taking the lead, amazing things will happen,” she said.

“The key is to go out and find one that works for you,” said Kemp, saying that there are many service organizations in
the community, encouraging people to connect with the members and finding out which one fits best with their life. And being younger means it’s an opportunity to go and join a group and bring “brand new fresh ideas,” he said, when it comes to raising money for a community and giving back.
And they hope this enthusiasm for volunteering continues on to a new generation.
“When your children are watching you volunteer, and making that a priority in your life, they grow up to believe that that’s what they’re supposed to do,” said Seiler. “It was role modeled to me, and now I hope to role model it to my children.”
“Even the members of our clubs that have kids, when they bring them to Rotary, it just makes my heart sing. I’m so happy that they see that their parents care enough to volunteer and to be in the community.” ■
