Lot 2009 Lot 2005
2005. Shirvan rug, east Caucasus dated 1324[AH] (1906-7AD), 4ft.11in. x 3ft.6in. 1.50m. x 1.07m. Even wear overall. £270-320
Lot 2007
2007. Shirvan rug, east Caucasus late 19th century, 6ft. x 4ft. 1.83m. x 1.22m. Overall uneven wear, possibly chemically ‘washed’. £50-100
2009. Attractive Marasali rug, Shirvan area, south east Caucasus mid 19th century, 4ft.11in. x 3ft.10in. 1.50m. x 1.17m. Overall wear and damage with crude repairs, outer guard stripe missing left side, outer main border and guard stripe missing right side. Despite its condition, this rug has superb colour and the spacious ‘drawing’ associated with the best early Marasalis. Examples such as this in a non-prayer format are comparatively rare but it is interesting that both the rhomb- shaped botehs themselves - their size, interior decoration and predominantly red and white palette, with the invariable exception of one red and blue group - as well as their chevron lay-out in the field - closely follow those of the motifs on the yellow-ground prayer rugs. The two principal border designs seen here are also characteristic of the best yellow-ground prayer rugs - see, for example, Bennett, Oriental Rugs Vol. 1 Caucasian, no. 235. Now loosely sewn down on a plain linen backing. £500-700
Lot 2006
2006. Good Khirdagyd-Chichi rug, Kuba region, north east Caucasus third quarter 19th century, 5ft.2in. x 3ft.5in. 1.58m. x 1.04m. Both ends rewoven, some reweaves in field. An excellent example of this well-known group with a typical rich yellow field and characteristic design. An example illustrated in Bennett, Oriental Rugs Vol. 1: Caucasian, no. 356, is dated 1282[AH] (1865-6AD); it has an ivory ground but other than that is almost identical, with the same designs in both field and borders; it is also of very similar dimensions, being a few centimetres shorter and narrower. £760-800
Lot 2008
2008. Karabakh long rug, south west Caucasus late 19th-early 20th century, 8ft.7in. x 3ft.8in. 2.62m. x 1.12m. Overall even wear, both ends rewoven. £300-350
