1616. Interesting Indian carpet in the design of the Hunting Carpet of Pope Pius IX, modern with central inscription cartouche, 19ft. x 11ft. 11in. 5.80m. x 3.6m. The design of this carpet is that of one of the most famous of all Safavid carpets, which was found nailed to the floor of the Quirinale Palace in Rome during the 19th century Revolution at a time when Pope Pius IX was on the Papal throne. The carpet is now in the Poldo Pezzoli Museum in Milan. When the carpet was torn up from the floor, several large fragments of border became detached which were subsequently rewoven and quickly faded, as can be seen in the reproductions of the carpet in Pope’s Survey and elsewhere. One of the original border fragments turned up unrecognised in a Christie’s sale in London a few years ago and was acquired by the Textile Gallery, London; it is now in a leading Italian private collection. Interestingly, the hunting carpet may be the oldest surviving Safavid weaving of this type, the date appearing in the central woven inscription being open to two interpretations, either 929 AH (1522-3AD) or 949AH (1542- 3AD). The earlier of the two dates is probably the one most favoured by students of Safavid weaving today, which would make it predate the Ardabil carpets by 17 years. The full inscription, of which the present carpet has a reasonable facsimile, reads in translation: ‘By the diligence of Gyath u-din Jamai was completed/This renowned work that appeals to us by its beauty. In the year 929.’ £2,500-3,000
