Lot 1937


1937. Saryk Turkmen part cotton chuval, Turkmenistan or Afghanistan late 19th-early 20th century, 2ft.10in. x 5ft. 0.86m. x 1.52m. A central cut all through the middle is probably repairing a kink which stopped the piece lying flat; there is a greater loss in the lower borders that in the top ones. Other smaller kinks have been repaired on the left side of the chuval. £100-200

1942. Good Ersari chuval, Afghanistan late 19th century, 3ft.2in. x 4ft.11in. 0.97m. x 1.50m. Very slight even wear. A chuval with superb wool and colour. £300-500

1938. Fragmented Ersari Turkmen carpet, south Turkmenistan or north east Afghanistan, second half 19th century, 9ft.2in. x 9ft. 2.80m. x 2.75m. Overall uneven wear, reduced in length by cut across what is now base, several reweaves and small patches. Despite its fragmentary condition, this is a particularly beautiful Ersari main carpet probably dating from nearer the middle than the end of the 19th century. £300-400


1940. Attractive Tekke Turkmen dip khali, Turkmenistan or Afghanistan late 19th entury, 6ft.4in. x 4ft.4in. 1.93m. x 1.32m. Three or four holes in field, small hole main border lower left, damage, holes and losses to base elem, small area of moth damage upper elem left. An interesting Tekke rug with rich colour, excellent wool and the unusual use of the dyrnak gul, a motif most often found on Yomut rugs and on some Ersaris. A slightly older Tekke example, at the time of publication the only one of this design known, is illustrated in colour in the ‘Rugs on the Market’ section of an early issue of Hali magazine. £200-300

1944. Tekke Turkmen chuval, Turkmenistan late 19th century, 2ft.5in. x 3ft.6in. 0.74m. x 1.07m. Small losses lower corners, patch from a Yomut chuval inserted into narrow top plain elem. Note the pile is in the opposite direction to the design. £225-300
