Lot 1736


1736. An attractive collection of five batiks, three narrow panels in green, turquoise and duck-egg blue, two with mythical animals and one with floral design; cream and pale blue panel with flowers and a central band of saw-edge design; (time stains) and the fifth in shades of brown, cream and blue with an abstract design; various sizes, together with a small Sumba ikat panel, all Dutch East Indies, mid-20th century. (6) Provenance: owner states these pieces came from the same trunk which contained the ‘Soo Pieng’ signed batik sold for £4,800 in these Rooms, Lot 1821, 8th December 2011. £150-250

1738. Fine Japanese silk and gold metal brocade panel, in k’ossu, mid 20th century, 97½in. x 90in. 248cm. x 229cm. With original plain gold yellow satin lining, and original silk tassels to each corner. £200-250

1739. Two pairs of Chinese silk embroidered sleeve bands, late 19th century, each pair overall 26in. x 12½in. 66cm. x 32cm. Each pair framed and glazed. (2) £50-100


Lot 1740


1740. Pair of impressive Chinese ancestor portraits, painted in body colour on paper, the man a court official of the 9th civil rank wearing the embroidered silk rank badge of a Paradise Flycatcher on a purple-blue surcoat over a lighter blue gold embroidered silk ch’i-fu and an imperial red hat; seated on an elaborate throne-seat covered in a faux tiger skin textile decorated with chintamani stripes and balls. The woman wearing a large red silk pa’o coat with a matching rank badge to her husband, with the bird facing left towards him, over a typical green silk embroidered skirt and wearing the usual elaborate filigree gold headdress with hanging pearl pendants over her superbly coiffured grey hair. Second half 19th century, each 59in. x 34½in. 150cm. x 88cm. The paper ground of each with some staining and slight tears in places not encroaching on the image; each laid down on textile backing and folded over board, the board then laid down on silk ground, framed and glazed.
