Lot 1749 Lot 1746
1746. Chinese informal robe of rich terracotta damask silk woven with all over trellised flowers embroidered in coloured silks in satin stitch and Peking Knot with all over exotic butterflies, peonies and other flowers to the front, back and wide sleeves; black silk binding to collar and edges embroidered in blue and ivory silks with black silk endless knot fastenings, pale blue damask silk lining. 19th century. Some fading to the damask ground and few time stains, some wear to black silk edges.
£200-300
1749. Long Indian Kalamkari (printed cotton) saf, probably Rajasthan possibly mid 19th century, 40in. x 202in. 102cm. x 513cm. Damage and holes at left end, two small red stains, other larger stained areas; although the ends are ragged, it appears that the design ends at both and the piece has not been reduced. A remarkable and impressive Kalamkari apparently of good age; the multiple mihrab or saf design is unusual on a textile of this type; the procession of various animals and remarkably camp looking groups of soldiers make an amusing design across the top of the safs.
£200-300
Lot 1750
1750. An extremely fine and rare Indian robe, in a deep burgundy silk, elaborately decorated, especially down the back, in fine metal brocade. 1747. Tibetan resist dyed woollen cloth, a separate section with green ground sewn into centre. Early 20th century, 84in. x 29in. 254cm. x 84cm. Front side faded, slight wear. The ground cloth itself appears machine made and could be European in origin. The pattern itself has a very long history and can be seen in almost identical form on kelim fragments found in the Taklamakan desert by Sir Aurel Stein early in the 20th century. £80-120
Lot 1751
1751. An exceptional fragmented embroidered felted wool panel, consisting of two border fragments and the central star medallion. The border fragments consisting of a complete right border, approximately 70 percent of the left border and the complete top border. The superb silk embroidery in an exceptionally fine version of chain stitch on a fine surmey (blue-black) ground, Sind, north west India (now Pakistan) 1847. Complete right border 59in. x 9in. 150cm. x 22cm., complete top border 49in. 125cm. Central star 16in. x 15½in. 41cm. x 39.5cm. It is probable that the field was plain surmey felt which became heavily moth damaged. An exceptional rare feature of this piece is the woven inscription cartouche, “Shikapore/Scinde/1847”. (3) £400-600
