1776. Three West African wool and cotton blankets, Mali, 20th century, 118in. x 48in 300cm. x 122cm., 95in. x 51in. 241cm. x 130cm. and 83in. x 44in. 211cm. x 137cm. Each woven in narrow strips, the white areas of the ground in cotton, the darker areas wool; the embroidery in the main is in wool. One piece badly stained, the ‘black and white’ checkerboard blanket slightly stained/ discoloured down one side. (3) £150-250

1777. African wool blanket, Mali, west Africa, 20th century, 77in. x 49in. 196cm. x 125cm. Areas of damage, holes. Woven in narrow strips joined vertically; for the most part in striped plainweave, with two bands of embroidery in a form of extra weft wrapping. £60-80

1775. Two impressive Ashanti ceremonial hangings, both with woollen cloth grounds decorated with a collage of machine made textiles of various types and colours cut out in naïve animal, floral and abstract forms and sewn into large squares formed by machine- made silk ribbon also sewn on. Both Ghana, 20th century, 84in. x 138in. 213cm. x 350cm. and 78in. x 127in. 198cm. x 323cm. The larger with holes and the smaller with one damaged corner. (2) £200-300

1778. An interesting large collection of 19th century and later bone and wood lace bobbins and separate beads comprising nine named bone bobbins: Queen For Ever; God Save the King; Ann; James Hudson; Jane; I love ….(?); Martha; Richard; Fanny; thirteen bone bobbins variously decorated with spots, stripes, inlaid wire and pewter decoration;, two partly dyed green; together with wood bobbins comprising ten with assorted pewter inlays; one bound with gold- coloured wire; fifteen assorted wood turned bobbins with spangles; two turned wood without spangles; three modern turned wood bobbins and a novelty glass bobbin with internal ‘floating’ bobbin; two commemorative bobbins, one inscribed ’Made from an apple tree which fell in the Great Storm 16th October 1987’; one inscribed ‘Princess Beatrice of York 8-8-83’; another turned wood bobbin with a label stating that it originates from St. Andrew’s Church, Farnham ‘Made from the oak bell frame erected in the tower about 1723 and recently replaced in order for two extra bells to be added.’ Together with a printed card – ‘Edition 1899’ of beads: comprising three yellow Aleppo, thirteen (of seventeen) red Aleppo (four missing); twenty-eight (of thirty) various ‘Lamp Beads’ (two missing) together with twenty loose beads; and three articles on Lace Bobbins.
