Chris Jack, an instructor with the Los Angeles Unified School District and one of the judges, helped organize a lot of the be- hind-the-scenes work in preparation for the activity. Many other vocational school and high school instructors were on hand to support their students while competing. Todd Ramsey, who was a first-time judge in one of the hands- on activities, said the event was eye-opening for him. “First, the scope of industries and trades represented here are amazing. This competition is a reminder that these skills and techniques are still being taught in our nation’s schools by instructors who are passionate about finding ways to keep young people inter-

ested in electronics and/or automotive,” he said. “It’s also inspirational to me and others in the industry to see up-and- coming 12-volt professionals who demonstrate true pride and skill in their chosen vocational path.” Jack Cutts with the Consumer Electronics Association, which owns and operates MECP, added: “For MECP, SkillsUSA repre- sents both the viability of 12 volt as a career path with potential and a new crop of entry-level technicians for MECP certification and employers around the country. As installation technicians move on in their careers, the industry still needs qualified peo- ple in install bays doing good work.”
