Will It Be MirrorLink ... or Something Else?
The emerging standard for apps in the vehicle is coming along, but individual vendors may beat them to the punch.

martphones have changed everything for consumers, and being connected is what they expect all the time — even in their cars. Whether it’s getting directions, listening to tunes, posting to Facebook or simply
making calls, people want to easily and safely access those functions from their phones while driving. Yet how in-car connectivity becomes a reality remains to be seen. Automakers and aftermarket manufacturers will need to agree on some kind of standard that is compatible with the varied and ever-changing universe of smartphones and the wide range of existing and upcoming car stereos in the market. The challenges as of now are many. The Connected Car Consortium (CCC) has taken up the cause, promoting what it believes should be the industry standard, Mir- rorLink, formerly known as the Terminal Mode Specification. It allows the screen of a car radio to “mirror” what is seen on a smartphone. “Consumers are used to having a smartphone with a num- ber of apps that they’re using most of the time they’re awake,” said Alfred Tom, chairman of the CCC’s ecosystem work group. “They’re used to being connected, but the issue is when you get
