High End Car Stereo, located in Philadelphia, Pa., recently accomplished a highly technical install on a Mercedes SLR McLaren. This luxurious Mercedes created quite the task, said Owner Tony Perez, who handled the designing and technical aspects. The install

featured a single-DIN with


screen, installed behind the factory radio cover with a customized ABS surround finished in fiberglass and interior-match paint. The unit feeds an Audison Thesis Quattro processor / amplifier, which was installed in the trunk on a custom Plexiglas pedestal with a glow of accent lighting for a classy look. The front stage features two drivers in custom fiberglass pods on the A pillars: Hertz Mille 3-inch midrange and 1.5-inch tweeter. A 6.5-inch mid driver was added to each door with a custom mount wrapped in leather for appearance. Perez said the K40 radar was the most difficult part of the entire install. Due to the fact that the $500,000 car has a body made mostly out of carbon fiber, the team had to be less than conventional in setting up the radar. Matt Ross, who handled the technical aspects and installation of the audio and the radar, had to go through the bottom of the plastic bumper to get a signal that the rest of the car’s carbon fiber body would not allow. Perez said the radar took nearly 140 hours to install, a job that typically takes only six hours. The entire installation was a six-week project that they charged $51,000 to complete. Thanks to this skillful team, they were able to keep all of the Mercedes’ stock parts intact.

Business Branches Out to Golf Carts

In Rock Hill, S.C., Sound on Wheels has gained a new area of business: golf carts. It began when some customers came in requesting various installs on their golf carts, said Owner Rick Miller. Soon after, he started purchasing golf carts from country clubs to work on them, installing everything from subwoofers to mobile video units. This new addition to the crew’s skill set is only a small part of the business, but is becoming increasingly more popular.
