Surge in demand for great value plants

We speak to Tesselaar’s Anthony Tesselaar about future trends in consumer demand.

Anthony’s renowned expertise once again revealed some intriguing news for the plant sector. “Planteria managers and retail buyers are seeing a change in consumer plant preferences. Across the globe, buyers are saying their customers are now looking for low-risk, high-value plants that not only look good in the garden centre, but that have a tried-and-true reputation in the garden.”

structure and backbone of their garden in place, they are looking for an increased amount of dramatic and flowering plants.” For Tesselar, these include Tropicanna Storm – Anthony adds, “By using this plant to dress up the garden at low cost this is influencing buying and stock selection by retailers for spring 2012; retailers are making the connection that consumers are choosing material like shrubs or perennials which provides a cost and maintenance saving, compared to annuals which require replacement each year - the message is still about value!”

SMARTER SHOPPERS Anthony says that he felt the importance of value became evident when talking to buyers during the autumn period. “They will be allocating less space to large plants or high value items as opposed to shrubs that flower. Today’s gardeners are also shopping smarter - they want to enjoy the time spent in the garden and are focusing more on plants that have a great reputation. Everyone is looking for value, not necessarily cheap plants, but those that perform over the long term. Today’s gardeners are looking for both dramatic colour and form, with a minimum of care that helps

highlight the established plants they already have in the garden.”

GOLD AWARD AT PLANTARIUM Plantarium 2011 saw the worldwide launch of Rock & Roll from Tesselaar International. This exciting new Alstroemeria has distinctive variegated foliage (yellow fading to white with a green edge) and striking flowers, and attracted great interest at their ‘Rock & Roll’ (see below) style stand. An impact plant for

the garden, pot or when used as a cut flower, the dramatic colour combination of green, white and red makes this an ideal occasion plant. The plant was awarded with a Silver Medal at Plantarium where the jury highlighted the innovation in foliage colours and its attraction even without flowers!
