Future trends in domestic landscaping

Written by Jane Campion, Head of Marketing, Brett Landscaping.

for winter we could be forgiven for letting thoughts of garden landscaping slip to the back of our mind – replaced by feelings of family, Christmas and crisp winter days. However, spring is now only three months away so we need to start thinking about what consumers will be looking for over the year ahead. We may well see the housing market remain slow for some time

Winter warning from

DMMP As a harsh winter is forecast for the UK, a supplier of crucial bad weather equipment and products is urging organisations to get ready for what lies ahead in order to protect vulnerable members of society. “Long term weather forecasters such as Exacta Weather and Netweather are suggesting that the period from November to February will feature below average temperatures and inevitably snow,” explains Marcus Palmer, managing director of DMMP Limited. The company imports and distributes machinery such as salt spreaders as well as everyday winter items such as de-icers. “We were inundated with organisations wanting spreaders right in the middle of the drama but roads were closed and conditions treacherous so we couldn’t make urgent deliveries,” continues Marcus. “We are urging organisations to buy now as we are looking at a winter as hard as the last one, if not worse.” 8For more information call 0845 643 9776 or visit www.dmmp.co.uk

to come, however from experience we have seen that at such times people frequently choose to invest more in their properties rather than move. Here we come to the infamous ‘kerb appeal’ of a property where domestic landscaping can make such a dramatic improvement to a home. Gardens are increasingly perceived as extensions of the home; in this way we can encourage adding an extra ‘outdoor’ room where consumers can entertain and enjoy the spring and summer months to come. This is particularly important for younger families where landscaping along with clever planting can create fun spaces which the whole family can enjoy in the day. In the evenings, whilst their children sleep after their adventure in the great outdoors, parents can entertain friends with outdoor dining. Given the time pressures that homeowners are under in their lives we see the increasing trend for smart flag patios that are both simple to install and require minimal maintenance. It is particularly important that both manufacturers and builders merchants work to create ‘the look’ via in-store displays and on-line information which provide inspiration and simple solutions for our customers. Many home owners are also looking to gain off road parking spaces for their cars – especially in congested urban spaces. This doesn’t have to mean a triumph of function over form with many driveway products now able to create the first impression ‘wow’ factor. The caveat is that these now have to incorporate a Sustainable Drainage System to prevent water draining onto the carriageway. The use of permeable block paving fulfils this requirement without compromising on space or aesthetics making it a win-win design solution for the homeowner. Given the growing interest in sustainability amongst all of us, permeable block paving also filters out the majority of pollutants before it enters the water cycle making it good for the environment and garden wildlife – in many cases it can even be linked into water harvesting systems. In closing, we need more than ever to show how we are remaining pro-active in responding to our customer’s demands for aesthetics, value and sustainability.” 8For more information call 0845 6080 577, email landscapinginfo@brett.co.uk or visit www.brett.co.uk/landscaping
