As we prepare to say ‘Hello’ to the New Year, it is time to reflect over the last 12 months and in particular the impact that the global financial crisis had on the retail plant sector. To a large extent, this was very positive in that the consumer continued to seek solace in the world of plants! The realisation that this is now the economic future we all have to function within has triggered a surge in plant breeding across the globe with much of this in evidence during the year at the various trade events. We were delighted to see the emergence of the International Breeders Showcase at
the National Plant Show in June, and understand this area will be more substantial in 2012. There is no question that the loss of three regional plant events next year will only serve to aid the HTA in its pursuit of an even more comprehensive plant show. We do however reflect sadly on the loss of GAN, Woking and Eastgro and question whether enough has been done to rescue these events. The localised focus remains important to many smaller growers and this was emphasized at both SWG in Exeter and GroSouth in Sussex. This issue of Retail Plants and Shrubs is
packed with a mixture of grower profiles, product news and also previews the 30th Anniversary of IPM Essen in January. We take this opportunity to congratulate the organisers on this magnificent achievement - a truly stunning event for all those involved in trees and shrubs!
