SENSE OF NATURE Astra Plant bvba is a 10-hectare garden plant nursery that produces a standard range of 50 species in different shapes and sizes. The main location is in Meer with a 5.5-hectare production area. A consumer panel is used to test customer preference and this, coupled with a presence at public garden fairs,

Astra Plants creates an atmosphere in which the consumer is comfortable. For every feeling, every moment and every place there is an evocative plant. A selection from the assortment of plants includes various special types of Euonymus (Pierrolino), Choisya, Liriope, Stokesia and Viburnum. HEDGE PLANT SPECIALISTS Four main plant species form the backbone of Boomkwekerij Poppelaars, based in Rustenburgstraat: Fagus sylvatica, Taxus baccata, Carpinus betulus and Buxus sempervirens. Since the early 90’s, owners Hans and Toon Poppelaar have focused on


hedge plants. This 70-hectare nursery also produces Prunus laurocerasus in different species including Prunus lusitanica Angustifolia in various sizes. Hedging plants have become a major area of growth in recent years as consumers seek to both reduce noise levels in urban areas and to satisfy boundary issues. ONE MILLION PERENNIALS Founded in 1983, Vaste Plantenkwekerij De Noordhoek has specialised in perennials for the past 12 years. One million perennials per annum are grown at its 2.5 hectare nursery in Schijfsebaan. A further 0.5 hectares are being added to the capacity in early 2012. De Noordhoek grows around 1,200 types of perennials in quatities of 100 – 25,000 pieces and also buys 1.5 million plants from other growers. 60 per cent of its perennials are for the domestic market with 40 per cent sold via exporters across Europe. VISUALLY ATTRACTIVE SHRUBS Van der Peijl Tuinplanten specialises in producing a range of shrubs in pots. 450,000 of these visually attractive plants are produced per annum. On its 5.5- hectare nursery, the range includes Hydrangeas, Skimmias, Prunus laurocerasus and Vibernums. The total assortment consists of more than 140 varieties and the grower is always looking for innovation with new types and sizes.
