SHOP 'TIL YOU DROP

FROM ARABIAN SOUKS TO SPRAWLING GLITZY MALLS WITH HUNDREDS OF OUTLETS, ABU DHABI IS A RETAIL HAVEN BOASTING THE LATEST FASHIONS AND TRADITIONAL TREASURES.

It's hard to visit a new destination and not be inspired to pick up something unique and different. So it's a good thing that shopping enthusiasts have ample opportunity to flex their credit cards in the UAE capital. Not only is the destination a tax-free haven, it also offers a wide choice of traditional souks and modern shopping malls where endless hours can be spent discovering hidden treasures. Visitors need not travel far to indulge in some retail therapy among the emirate's sprawling modern malls. By far the biggest is the Dalma Mall, which boasts 480 shops including speciality retail stores, restaurants and entertainment, making it a perfect stop-off for shopaholics. With more than 220 retail outlets including some of the world's best-known brands, and a range of entertainment options, Abu Dhabi Mall is another popular venue.

For a more intimate shopping experience in cosy surroundings, the Al Raha Mall offers an array of fashion outlets, a cinema and food court. The mall is conveniently located near Abu Dhabi International Airport and Yas Island. A retail haven with a waterfront setting can be found at Marina Mall, which has more than 300 stores, a 100-metre high viewing platform and ice-skating rink. Other options include Al Wahda Mall, which features 150 outlets selling fashion brands, jewellery, beauty products and entertainment; Fotouh Al Khair Centre, home to favourite brands such as Marks & Spencer, Nine West, DKNY and The Watch House; and Khalidiya Mall, a three-floor retail centre with distinctive Islamic architecture and shops selling every- thing from fashion to furnishings.

Away from the modern, glitzy malls, there are various traditional markets - souks - to amble through for a more local and authen- tic shopping experience. The souk consists of numerous small stores or stalls which sell a wide range of goods - both necessities and luxuries.
