INFRASTRUCTURE New developments


Sir Bani Yas, the first of the islands to open to the public, is the former nature reserve of HH Sheikh Zayed. Eight islands in total will offer resort accommodation and form a nature sanctuary unique to the Gulf region known as Desert Islands, developed by TDIC. Desert Islands is expected to generate US$326 million in tourism revenues when fully operational by 2020. The remaining elements of the Desert Islands projects are Dalma Island, which is rich in history and archaeological finds; and Discovery Islands, which comprise six islands abundant in marine life.


Saadiyat Island Al Reem Island Al Reem Island


Al Reem Island, which translates as the 'Island of the Gazelle', is a mere 300 metres to the east of Abu Dhabi island and will be residential and business driven. Three major developments Ð Shams Abu Dhabi, Najmat Abu Dhabi and Marina Square, built by Sorouh, Reem Investments and Tamouh respectively Ð will spring up there. These districts will together house an estimated 200,000 people. All will have apartments, some of which are already available for sale to both locals and foreigners.


Masdar City


An estimated US$22 billion budget has been allocated for the ambitious Masdar City devel- opment which is currently underway close to Abu Dhabi airport. When completed in 2016, Masdar City will be one of the world's most sustainable cities, powered by renewable energy. The 'green' development will include a university, commercial, residential and eco- friendly industrial areas.


Desert Islands


Off the western coastline of Abu Dhabi's Al Gharbia region (also known as the Western Region) is a cluster of islands, which provide the setting for an extraordinary tourist spot.

UNDERTAKINGS BEING OVERSEEN BY THE TDIC Masdar City


The transformation of Saadiyat Island, which means 'Island of Happiness', into a cultural hub is one of the biggest undertak- ings being overseen by the Tourism Devel- opment & Investment Company (TDIC), the asset development and management arm of Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority. The US$25


billion undertaking is being developed as a world-class tourism, cultural and residen- tial destination.


At 27 square kilometres, Saadiyat is half the size of the tropical island of Bermuda and lies 500 metres off the UAE capital's east coast. The island will have beaches, two golf courses (one of which, the Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, is already operational), nine hotels, marinas, villas and apartments, and is scheduled for completion by 2018. In a major coup, the island's Cultural District will house the first ever Louvre museum out- side Paris as well as a Guggenheim Museum and other cultural sites, all of which are being designed by the world's leading architects. The island, which has a 30-kilometre water frontage, is being developed into seven distinct districts: Cultural District, Saadiyat Beach, South Beach, The Wetland, Island Lagoons, Al Marina and Eco-Point. The overall development of the island will be phased over 15 years.
