The course features sand instead of a more traditional grass surface with separate grass and sand chipping areas, putting greens and a grass driving range. The front nine holes Ð par 35 Ð are based around an ancient archaeologi- cal site, while the back nine (par 36) have been constructed on flatter reclaimed land. There is not a blade of grass on the entire course and caddies constantly check yardages for burrows dug by dhubs, the local desert lizards. The reward for hitting the fairway, which is defined by a line of wooden stakes, is the privilege of hit- ting the next shot off a piece of portable Astroturf. Al Ghazal Golf Academy (AGGA) features some of the most advanced and innovative golf teaching technology in the world, making it both enjoyable and effective. Apart from PGA-qualified instructors, the academy has a Royle Golf Visual Communication System, which allows swings to be profession- ally assessed on monitors. These in turn allow the overlay of graphics, enabling students to compare their swings with those of some of the game's greatest players. The academy also has Durnian Frames, the specially-designed metal frames through which golfers can perfect their swing plane by following the lines of the frame.

The luxurious English-style clubhouse situ- ated atop a gentle hill offers great views of the course and the city.

Featuring a large terrace with room for up to 200 guests, the club is a popular venue with golfers and non-golfers alike, with its fully licensed bar, restaurant, swimming pool and tennis courts. There is also a health club with a gym, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room on its premises, and a pro shop offering a good selection of competitively priced golf-wear and equipment.

Al Ain

The oasis town of Al Ain, in eastern Abu Dhabi, also offers golf courses, namely the Al Ain Golf Club, Hilton Al Ain Golf Club and Palm Sports Resort, which also includes a rugby club, ten- nis courts and equestrian club.

Al Ain's golf clubs may not be quite up to the standard of those closer to the capital, but still afford a good round, made all the more com- fortable by Al Ain's year-round cooler climate. With no shortage of innovative and breath- taking courses, the challenge to visiting golfers will be how many rounds they can fit it during their stay in Abu Dhabi.
