Central Market

The Capital Centre development is already home to the Aloft Abu Dhabi Hotel as well as the iconic Capital Gate tower. The entire development will eventually house a total of 23 towers comprising hotels, residences and offices, complemented by a marina, grandstand and galleria.

Al Bateen Wharf

The Al Bateen district is the oldest occu- pied district in the UAE capital and is being redeveloped at a cost of US$435 million to include a signature waterfront destination with a luxury five-star hotel complex. The 54,000-square-metre phased development site will be known as the Al Bateen Wharf and will include a San Francisco-style Fisher- men's Marina and Al Bateen Wharf Hotel. The completion date for the whole project is expected to be 2013.

Airport expansion Central Market

The heart of the city has been transformed by another Aldar Properties project, the US$708 million Central Market development, which is located on the site of the old open- air souk. Set to open fully in 2011, the mar- ket reflects the style of a traditional Islamic bazaar with a modern twist. Visitors will find a range of up-market retail stores, restau- rants, hotels and outdoor water features.

Al Gurm

On the main Abu Dhabi island, Aldar Properties' eco-friendly Al Gurm waterfront resort will be set among mangrove trees on the western edge of the city. The resort will comprise private luxury homes and a five-star hotel.

Capital showcase

A more business-orientated but pivotal development is centred around the phased construction of the Capital Centre project, which has the state-of-the-art exhibition com- plex, the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), at its heart. ADNEC is designed to boost the capital's ability to host major exhibi- tions and conferences, as well as act as a spur to attract more visitors to Abu Dhabi.

A phased US$6.8 billion redevelopment of Abu Dhabi International Airport is underway, with the much anticipated Midfield Terminal set to open in the next few years. Once built, the terminal will increase the airport's capac- ity to 20 million passengers per year. A dedicated Etihad Airways terminal (T3) was added in 2009, while further developments including a new 109-metre, 20-storey air traffic control tower will eventually boost the hub's annual capacity to 40 million travellers.

Al Raha Beach Abu Dhabi Golf Resort

An extension of the Abu Dhabi Golf Club, home to the annual PGA Abu Dhabi Golf Champion- ship, this development will include a five-star, 176-room Westin Hotel along with a gated residential community.

Hotel developments

A swathe of new hotel developments is planned for the emirate. These include the beachfront Regent Emirates Pearl, a resort with a hotel and serviced apartments opposite the iconic Emirates Palace, and the Grand Corniche Hotel, a downtown landmark designed to cater to the emirate's business and leisure travellers, located on the Corniche. There will also be a number of other hotels from operators such as Four Seasons, and Rosewood. È
