Ferrari World, Abu Dhabi FULL STEAM AHEAD FROM DRAWING BOARD TO REALITY, ABU DHABI'S TRANSFORMATION INTO
A LEADING CULTURAL AND TOURISM HUB HAS BEEN RAPID. AND FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS ARE AFOOT AS THE EMIRATE CONTINUES ITS FAST-PACED GROWTH.
Abu Dhabi's measured pace of develop- ment has matched an ambitious long-term vision with a calculated strategy brought to life under the government's Plan Abu Dhabi 2030. Launched in 2007 by the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, the initiative aims to identify and respond to current and future development needs. In order to move ahead with its mission to become a leading tourism and cultural hub, the emirate's development has the twin focus of expansion into the outlying areas beyond the main city centre, and up into the Western Region, as well as concentrating on its wealth of natural offshore islands.
Moving forward Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority's (ADTA) target of increasing visitor numbers to 2.3

million by 2012 is reflected in the impres- sive number of residential, commercial, tourism and retail projects under develop- ment across the emirate. To meet visitor accommodation targets, current hotel stock must increase by a staggering 13,000 rooms and islands such as Saadiyat and Yas will be home to many of these new projects, which are part of bigger mixed-use community destinations.
Yas Island Yas Island is the current poster child for Abu Dhabi's future development follow- ing its high profile launch at the end of 2009. In addition to the state-of-the-art Yas Marina Circuit, the island also houses a Ferrari-branded theme park com- plete with go-kart, rally and dune buggy
tracks, and thrilling rollercoaster rides. Elsewhere on the island, theme parks, marinas and shopping malls are being built to complement the seven hotels that opened in late 2009.
Al Raha Beach Aldar Properties' Al Raha Beach develop- ment will be home to 120,000 residents when complete and is situated on the wa- terfront side of the main highway between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, 30 minutes from the city centre. It will feature a new Central Business District - the Al Dana precinct - along with extensive upscale residen- tial and hospitality options. Al Bandar, a community built around a marina with 511 units, was handed over by developers in September 2010.
