Manchester City fans were unsurprisingly over the moon at the takeover by the billionaire Gulf investor, even donning traditional Arab kanduras to show appreciation for their club's new propri- etor, who promised to turn City, a middle-ranking Premier League team, into one of the biggest clubs in the world. And as if that wasn't enough excitement, within hours of the deal being agreed, Manchester City broke the British transfer record to snatch Real Madrid player Robinho from under the noses of Chelsea who had been courting him all summer for a cool US$52.4 million. The club has since splashed out millions of dollars on a col- lection of stars, including Carlos Tevez, Yaya Toure and Edin Dzeko.


Soccer schools featuring former Manchester City players and coaches have been held in Abu Dhabi since the club, which is sponsored by UAE national carrier Etihad Airways, was taken over. Now thought to be the wealthiest club in the world, City may not have won the Champions League just yet, but with so much cash to flash, all eyes in the football world are now on its Abu Dhabi owners to see whether they really can make good on that promise.
