Horizon Signs, the Huddersfield based sign manufacturing specialist, is driving innovation in the industry by investing in bringing the younger generation into the workforce and training them up on the welding and fabrications side of the business. The majority of Horizon’s work is based around creating


bespoke signs and fabrication products for its customers. Those who have just left school or college bring with them fresh new ideas and skills thus driving this side of the company forward. Danny Templeman is an example of this, he joined the company when he was 17 years old and after four years of training on the welding and fabrications side of the business, he is now a key member of the Horizon team. Horizon recently used this


to its advantage with a job completed for Acis, a Real Time company, which specialises in providing solutions of real time location based intelligence systems for bus stops and train stations. Acis approached Horizon because they were having problems with vandalism affecting some of its units so they required a more substantial casing. With that brief in mind, Horizon produced a unit that houses the monitors securely, this proved a great success and resulted with Acis placing more orders. Around 80% of all Horizon’s


work is bespoke, this differs from the industry norm as the majority of sign companies and sign suppliers will only be able to offer the set sizes of the stock they keep, which is generally bought in large quantities, often from abroad. Horizon’s products are high quality, expertly constructed and because it has


its own powder coating works, it can paint signs in any colour to suit the customer’s needs. Ross Ball, Director at Horizon, commented: “Our partnership

The Lettering Centre, founded in 1872 and crafter of the highest quality signage, is emerging from the shackles of tradition and undergoing a total overhaul of its brand and image, spearheaded by new CEO Nick Cockett. In 2010 The Lettering Centre changed ownership, and is now


fronted by ambitious businessman Nick Cockett, who has high hopes for the company and aims to transform it into a sign-making force to be reckoned with. The company now has a new brand, represented in new imagery, new colours, and most importantly a new website. This website boasts online ordering forms, downloadable PDFs of the company’s projects and products, and most impressively, an interactive database which allows customers to log-in, check the progress of their projects, and give online feedback.


Cockett is determined to double the company’s revenue within


two years and is fiercely certain of its success, believing that there is no reason for a company as prestigious and reputable not to be a premier sign-maker in the UK. Dave Harper, who has worked for the company for 40 years, states: “It is a preoccupation with crafting the perfect flawless sign which gives the company its reputation and Nick aims to make sure everyone knows this.” The Lettering Centre was founded in 1872 by EJ and AT Bradford.


It originally specialised solely in sign-writing, gilding and hand-carving, and now produces an enormous range of signage, from vinyl graphics and digital print effects to complex metal work.
