September Gardening Jobs Vegetable gardeners are now literally reaping the rewards of the year's hard work. Now it's time to think about next year's crops. This month, stop fertilizing all except greenhouse vegetables. Harvest main crop potatoes and earth up celery to blanch it. Lift onions when the tops have died down, clean soil off the roots and hang them somewhere airy to dry off before netting (or if you are creative, plait them into strings). Hang somewhere dry and cool and they should keep well into spring. Plant garlic and onions when sets become available. Cut canes of raspberries, tayberries, loganberries and blackberries down to soil level as soon as they have finished fruiting and tie in the strongest of this year's new canes. Start to clean up the flower beds, cutting back anything that has finished blooming and keep deadheading those still flowering. Remove diseased leaves from roses to help keep them healthy next year. Plant rooted strawberries from runners produced by parent plants. If you plant them in hanging baskets, they won't be troubled by pests and are easy even if you don't have a garden. Pot up some herbs to grow indoors over the winter. A few pots placed loose in a window box look nice and will grow well on the kitchen window sill. They can easily be exchanged for fresh ones as you use them up. Bring houseplants that have spent the summer outside back in- doors, but check carefully for creepy crawlies first, as they love being inside and will breed like mad. There's nothing like getting up in the morning to find all the window sills covered in sticky minia- ture beasties. Save seed from annuals and ornamental grasses. Collect into paper envelopes and keep dry and cool until you are ready to sow them. Take cuttings from tender perennials such as fuchsias and pelargoniums to have a free display next spring. Cut off some none- flowering side shoots about 4" long just below a leaf joint. Pull off the lower leaves and push into a gritty compost (dipping the base in hormone rooting powder can speed up the process but isn't essen- tial). Water and cover with a plastic bag and leave in a bright spot. When roots have developed, pot on separately. (If you take cuttings of clematis, remember that these are one of the few plants where the cut should be made between two leaf joints rather than directly below a joint, otherwise, follow the same process.) Lastly, don't forget the wildlife. Keep bird baths topped up with clean water, wash out feeders ready for when the weather gets colder and sterilise nest boxes so next year's new families have the best start possible.

Desmond Llewelyn Born: Sep. 12, 1914 Died: Dec. 19, 1999 Welsh Actor. He is best remembered for his role of British Agent Q, in 17 of the first 19 James Bond movies. Of the first 19 Bond films, he did not appear in only two: "Doctor No" (1963) and "Live and Let Die" (1973). He first played the role of Q in "From Russia With Love," in 1963. On December 19, 1999, he was severely injured while driving home from a booksigning to promote his biography, "Q", when his car collided head-on with another near the village of Berwick, East Sussex. Taken to the local hospital, he died shortly after his arrival there. After his death, his Q role was taken by actor John Cleese, who played the role of Agent R, an assistant to Q in the 007 movie "The World is Not Enough" (1999) and was promoted to head of Q Branch in the next 007 movie "Die Another Day" (2002), thus reprising the title Q.
