Only the Queen is allowed to drive around this country without number plates, which makes her car rather easy to spot.


The first roadside petrol pump was introduced in Britain in 1920. Must have been one hell of a queue as by 1932 there were one million cars in the UK. And in 1960, the Morris Minor became the first car to sell a million in Britain.


The first Traffic Lights (powered by gas) were installed outside the Houses of Parliament in 1868. Unfortunately they blew up and killed a policeman.


Sir Malcolm Campbell (1885-1948), the renowned land speed racer, was once stopped by police for speeding on a bicycle.


A 30 MPH speed limit was imposed in British towns in 1935, yet speedometers didn’t appear in cars until 1937. How did that work ?


The first parking meters were installed in Oklahoma City in 1935. Britain did not have them until 1958, when 625 meters were set up across London.


The world’s first compulsory driving test was imposed on a Mr Bean in 1935.
