ON VIEW

Illuma has supplied lighting for LTGDC’s marketing suite at London’s 2012 Olympic site

Aptly named, The View is an inward invest- ment and marketing suite, located on the top two floors of a 16-storey development in Bow, East London. The site offers stun- ning panoramic views across the Olympic park and Stadium for the Games in 2012. London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC) required the light- ing to be adjustable to complement the multiple personalities of this dynamic and interactive space. The use of the marketing suite ranges from small intimate visits to large private functions and events, includ- ing a stimulating audio-visual experience. In response, the space has been zoned into different key areas through light, which can be operated locally or remotely depending on the required function of the interior. The interior concept, design and implemen- tation was carried out by Marchini Curran Associates, with the lighting design devel- oped in conjunction with Illuma’s Lighting Designer, Robert Lapworth and Lighting

Sales Executive, Ian McNeil. Directional Project 95 downlights provide a strong concentration of focal lighting onto the bespoke black lacquered display panels. Soft ambient lighting from Unilux compact fluorescent fittings complemented this dramatic statement.

The dramatic terraces are framed with an extract of an Alfred Lord Tennyson poem, chased by continuous runs of under-canopy light from the Illumaled Pathfinder, a versatile LED strip lighting system with an

IP66 rating. At floor level, the surface is punctuated with miniature LED downlights, the Camino, which have the option of mul- tiple aluminium covers. This combination of strong continuous lines and spots of light mimic the cityscape beyond. A combination of IRC and LED fittings were specified, in conjunction with the PIR and automated shut-off system to minimise electrical con- sumption - one of the requirements set out by LTGDC. www.illuma.co.uk

MODERN ART

Mike Stoane Lighting has created a special luminaire for the new Arts Council of England offices based around Xicato’s Spot Module

The Arts Council of England, an organisa- tion focused on increasing the widespread accessibility of art, has recently relocated its North West regional office to The Hive in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. A fittingly distinctive character and atmosphere was sought to properly host regional, national, international events and conferences at this new centre.

The design, including the lighting, was carried out by Witherford Watson Mann Architects (WWM). They have created a space that is stimulating for the creative people that use it, with a focus on quality and detail.

Amongst the luminaires used was a custom up / downlighter from Mike Stoane Lighting. This 100mm solid aluminium cube, anodised bronze, incorporates one or two Xicato Spot Modules. The simple but solid form of the luminaire integrates seamlessly into the interior while the consistent colour point and excellent colour rendering of the Xicato Spot Modules made them an ideal choice for the main conference facility with its splen- did red carpet and wooden cladding. www.xicato.com
