In keeping with the sustainable develop- ment theme of the Shanghai Expo, Traxon Technologies cooperated with its parent company OSRAM to realise dynamic lighting effects for the sophisticated dome-shaped We are the World Pavilion. Colour changing animations illuminated by 1,180 pieces of Traxon Nano Liner XB-27 RGB are integrated into the five-dome concept design of the pavilion, providing an ultra bright but envi- ronmentally friendly LED lighting experience to visitors. To cope with the constraints of the spherical contour of the pavilion, Traxon provided customised solutions such as power cables with specific lengths to their client. Equipped with Butler XT and Butler from Traxon’s control brand, e:cue lighting control, the eye-catching lighting effect delivers a world-class dynamic solid-state lighting experience.
The team were also involved in the inte- rior, helping to simulate distinct climatic scenarios in the pavilion. When visitors first enter, a virtual sky creates a natural
daytime effect in the entrance tunnel using 440 pieces of 16PXL Board RGB. To stimu- late participants during the visit, a wide virtual ‘window’ highlighted by 192 pieces of 64PXL Board RGB, showcases miniatures of popular Chinese tourist attractions under various weather conditions from sunny days to thunderstorms. The visual images are transformed according to the individual moods of visitors. Traxon’s Boards RGB not only generates un- limited dynamic lighting scenarios, but also creates spacious feelings inside the indoor pavilion.

SPANISH PAVILION
ARCHITECT: FUNDACIÓN METRÓPOLI LIGHTING DESIGN: PHILIPS LIGHTING
Philips Lighting has installed an eye-catch- ing representation of the city of Bilbao in the Spanish Pavilion. In partnership with architect studio Fundación Metrópoli, the massive scale model measures 14 x 7m and includes 1,900 nodes of Philips iColorFlex SL individually illuminating each building, and 80 metres of blue Flexitube to create the Bilbao River, all controlled by a Pharos LPC X.
The Light Sculpture displays the urban evo- lution of Bilbao and represents three Bilbao revolutions: The Industrial revolution, the Urban revolution of the past 25 years and the Knowledge revolution – the city’s plan- ning for the 21st Century. The Philips CK iColor Flex SL range was the
preferred technology as every LED node could be addressed individually offering the designer the possibility to light any building at any time in any colour, allowing all the dynamic lighting effects and animations within the sculpture. The 20-DMX universe Pharos LPC X control- ler is fully synchronised with the audio and video images projected onto the pavilion walls. Each aspect of the sculpture changes constantly, expressing a luminous choreog- raphy supporting the spectacular projected images of urban and economic transforma- tion of the city for an immersive multimedia and interactive tour.
The control system had to meet multiple requirements; high capacity control for twelve universes of individual fixtures with- in this complex array, keep synchronised to the video projection and audio and be able to create the wide variety of the designer’s required effects; the Pharos LPC20 (Pharos Architectural Controls is a Philips strategic partner) was able to do this with ease.
