S. KOREAN PAVILION

ARCHITECT: MASS STUDIES LIGHTING DESIGN: NEWLITE

Positioned between the powerful presence of China and Japan, Korea culture has long been subject to imported cultures and global influences. It is a mix that defines contemporary Korean society, a fact archi- tects Mass Studies wanted to convey in their design for the South Korean Pavilion. Taking the idea of ‘convergence’ as their main theme, the pavilion is an intertwining of symbols and space.

Mass Studies took Han-geul, the Korean alphabet, as the primary design element, its pleasing geometry repeating throughout the pavilion. Individual characters lump together to form bigger characters, filling whole façades with text that folds round to form giant three-dimensional letters. These enclose the pavilion forming room for the exhibition spaces.

The primary geometries that compose the Han-geul letters are universal to other cultures, and so act as a sort of ‘open’ sym- bology that visitors can experience through horizontal, vertical and diagonal move- ments around the pavilion.

The exterior surfaces feature two styles. The perimeter façade is covered in the Han- geul characters - white panels with a relief of letters in four different sizes. The rest of the surface is composed of Art Pixels, 45 x 45cm aluminum panels created by Korean artist, Ik-Joong Kang - renowned for creat- ing huge art walls out of small hand-painted tiles, either self-produced or gathered from around the world. with Mass Studies to create a suitable scheme for the exterior. At night, the white Han-geul panels are back lit in sections, highlighting the pattern of characters cover- ing the façade. Newlite specified LEDs by Korean manufacturer Exvision. These were installed in grouped circuits and controlled by DMX to create a constantly changing glow of letters.

For the 40,000 or so brightly coloured art tiles, Newlite used 220V/150W 4,000K HID outdoor flood lights. Each of these tiles is individually autographed by the artist and will be sold for charity – an inventive and productive way of recycling the structure at the end of the Expo. www.newlite.co.kr www.massstudies.com

Mass Studies’ concept for the South Korean Pavilion converges signs with space. Coloured Art tiles and white panels showing the Han-geul alphabet cover the exterior of the building. DMX-controlled LED groups illuminate the smaller character groups that make up the larger letters of the façade
