PROJECT / SHANGHAI EXPO 2010, CHINA xxxxx

CHINESE PAVILION

ARCHITECT:HE JINGTANG LIGHTING DESIGN:SHANGHAI CITILUM

Dubbed the Oriental Crown, the Chinese Pavilion sits, as you might expect, at the centre of the World Expo site. Architect He Jingtang’s design incorporates a wealth of Chinese symbolism, with the completed structure drawing inspiration from the dougong cross beams used in traditional Chinese architecture. The red colour of the pavilion – a nod to the ding, an ancient bronze cauldron – was of particular impor- tance. A lucky colour in china, it was vital that the precise red was achieved. The ‘China Red’ (or Gugon red) used is the same as that found in Beijing’s Forbidden City. In order to illuminate the 30-metre high, 160,000 square metre pavilion and its traditional Chinese features at night, over 23,000 OSRAM Golden Dragon Plus LEDs were used, their light covering a distance of 66 metres. OSRAM worked on the exact mixture of LED light in Gugong red for six months.

Osram helped ensure the Chinese Pavilion shone with China Red - mimicking Beijing’s Forbidden City

In total, more than 150,000 OSRAM LEDs were used to illuminates the pavilions and boulevards throughout the Expo ground. The lighting design for the 142,000 square- metre Expo Centre, for example, is based on OSRAM’s intelligent digital DALI light- ing management system. This system uses electronic control gear to provide envi- ronmentally-friendly flexibility - ensuring light is dimmed where appropriate and only switched on when required.

By integrating fluorescent lamps and com-

pact fluorescent lamps, in combination with energy-efficient electronic control gears, OSRAM have achieved energy savings of up to 25 percent compared with conventional lighting solutions. The dynamic dimming effects of OSRAM’s Linearlight LED mod- ules that are also used provide the ideal ambience in the Expo Centre for presenting science and technology. www.osram.com

NANPU BRIDGE

The Nanpu Bridge is one of three major access points that received an LED update prior to the World Expo

As part of the organiser’s effort to give visitors the best possible first impression, the main access points to the World Expo underwent a significant overhaul in the run- up to the event. This included Shanghai’s Nanpu Bridge, Lupu Bridge and pedestrian overpasses which were all updated with Everlight LED lighting, adding both colour

and clarity. Everlight’s RGB full-colour, high-power LEDs give the bridges a playful presence at night. The majority of the lighting on the overpass comes from a combination of Everlight’s high power white LEDs, providing general illumination for pedestrians.

The organisers were won over by Everlight

LED’s green credentials in terms of manu- facturing and energy efficiency. It was also felt that LED light could enhances the uni- formity of the road surface and provide safe access into the World Expo site. Both instal- lation projects are carried out in coopera- tion with Everlight’s partners in Shanghai. www.everlight.com
