A FIRST FOR BABY SWIMMING IN CHINA

The STA, Aquakiddies / Aquababies and Family Box have teamed up to create the first ever baby swim school in Beijing. Julie-Ann James, head Swimming Coach from Aquakiddies / Aquababies said: “Because most swim schools in

China start from the age of seven years, the baby swim school at Family Box is a very exciting and significant project.

With the one child per family policy, parents in China are very protective and will only accept a

swimming programme that is proven to be safe and effective. “It will take us some time to reassure parents and dispel old myths associated with baby swimming, but we firmly believe that by offering the STA’s structured informative programme, we will gain the confidence of nervous parents.” Aquakiddies / Babies was founded in 1993 by Julie-Ann James. The Aquakiddies / Babies method of teaching was first pioneered in Australia during the 1960s. Originating from Australia herself, Julie-Ann was one of the first children this method was taught to. Aquakiddies / Babies have now grown to be taught at over 30 pools throughout London and the surrounding areas and are now expanding its classes throughout the whole of England.

LUNG INFECTION WARNING FOR YOUNG SWIMMERS

A new study suggests that children who start swimming before the age of two may be at increased risk of a common infant lung infection, and possibly asthma and respiratory allergies later in life. The findings, issued in the European Respiratory Journal, reveals that exposure to chlorinated pools may affect children’s respiratory health by increasing the incidence of asthma, allergic rhinitis and hay-fever in those who are vulnerable to allergies.

Chlorine-based disinfectants inactivate a wide range of water-borne pathogens. However, when these chemicals undergo a reaction with organic matter such as urine and sweat, chlorine releases a mixture of by-products that can irritate the eyes, skin and upper airways.

Researchers examined 847 students between 13 and 18 years of age who had been swimming in indoor chlorinated and unchlorinated pools.

The result revealed that those who spent more than 1,000 hours in chlorinated pools were up to 14.9 times more vulnerable to asthma and 3.5 times more likely to have allergic rhinitis. Though cross-sectional study reveals children who are more prone to allergies can develop asthma, however, it is still ambiguous whether it is directly linked to chlorine exposure.

IT’S SHANGRI-LA FOR ASTRALPOOL!

AstralPool has completed two of the most glamorous pool projects in the world.

The Shangri-La Villingili Resort and Spa, located in the southern part of the Maldive Islands, has opened its doors as the country’s biggest hotel. AstralPool completed the construction of the 73 private swimming pools for the villas, including a central swimming pool,

and supplied the spas, saunas and steam baths. The second project was the Shangri-La Boracay Resort and Spa which is located on the island of Boracay, one of the most popular destinations for tourists visiting the Philippines. The 25 swimming pools for the private villas, the two central swimming pools, the children’s pool and massage pool were all completed

by AstralPool Singapore. The company was also responsible for installing the saunas, steam baths and water cascades that complement the resort’s range of water facilities and equipment. All swimming pools in both resorts are equipped with water purifying systems through salt chlorinators and automatic pH control.

THE NATIONAL SWIMMING POOL FOUNDATION AT ME

POOL & SPA 2010

The 4th Middle East Pool & Spa exhibition in Dubai this September will see the organisers, Reed Exhibitions, introducing the National Swimming Pool Foundation to the Arabian Gulf audience. A first for the region, the introduction will be through a series of seminars which are expected to attract professionals from the pool and spa industry, in addition to pool facility management professionals.

“The exhibition has always been a marketing arena for the pool and spa companies to tap into the prosperous Gulf market, but it lacked high scale seminars and presentations and at Reed Exhibitions, we aim, from our cooperation with the National Swimming Pool Foundation, to cover this gap and open the door for specialists and associations to present their ideas and expertise to the Middle East audience,” says Tarek Ali, Event Manager. The National Swimming Pool Foundation will organise a certified course for Pool Operators designed to provide individuals with the basic knowledge, techniques, and skills of pool and spa operations. The Certified Pool/Spa Operator® certification programme has delivered more training than any other programme in the pool and spa industry since 1972, resulting in more than 240,000 successful CPO® certifications in 44 countries. The course will be held within the exhibition halls, and advance registration will be available at www.mepool.com – the show’s official website. For more information on this or to exhibit on the UKTI Pavilion, contact the show’s UK representative, Khara-Jade Warren using the details below.
