BPL RENEWS 3-YEAR PARTNERSHIP WITH STA
Barnsley Premier Leisure has renewed its 3-year partnership with the Swimming Teachers’ Association. The agreement will see the Sports Trust continue to offer and deliver the STA’s range of swimming teaching, first aid and pool plant qualifications and use the Learn to Swim Programme.
MEN V WOMEN CHARITY SWIM
CHALLENGE
Aqua Sphere, the swimwear specialists is daring all swimmers to compete in brand new men vs women Swim Challenge. Pitching men against women to raise funds and awareness for breast and prostate cancer, the challenge is set to become the ultimate yardstick for who rules the pool in 2010 – men or women?
Dave Redfern, Leisure Operations Manager at Barnsley Premier Leisure said; “STA offer a comprehensive range of accredited qualifications that service all of our leisure and training needs, and furthermore we believe that their swimming teaching qualifications enable
our teachers to become better qualified and have an improved understanding about teaching.” The STA and BPL are also working together to explore new ideas to expand the aquatic programme. Roger Millward, the STA’s Chief Executive says; “Our organisations enjoy a great synergy and we now look forward to working with BPL for another three years, and creating innovative new ways in which they can further expand their swimming programmes for the purpose of encouraging more people to get involved in swimming and generating additional revenue.”

ASA DISMAYED AT DELAYS TO BIRMINGHAM’S 50M POOL
The ASA has said it is dismayed to learn of further delays in the building of a 50 metre pool in Birmingham – referring to the project as ‘swimming’s number one priority’.
David Sparkes, the Chief Executive of the ASA, said it was a national disgrace that Britain’s second city still does not have a 50m pool linked to a co-ordinated sports strategy. He called upon the political leadership in Birmingham to address the need for a 50 metre pool now and a find a way of delivering this facility before the London Olympics as promised.
“We all recognise that the council’s finances are under threat but swimming has demonstrated that it has the capacity to build social cohesion and healthier communities.
Until 30 November 30, swimmers of all abilities are invited to sign on to each day to log their hours (not their laps) in the water.
The Swim Challenge website will track the total times of men vs. women via a “leader meter” posted on the website and created as a widget so that competitors can keep tabs on their counterparts. The site will also allow swimmers to individually track their personal progress in the pool, encouraging
them to swim longer each day. At the end of the Challenge, Aqua Sphere will divide a €25,000 donation between the Prostate Cancer Foundation and the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The amount allocated to each will be determined by the cumulative hours swum by each gender. Men will be swimming for the Prostrate Cancer Foundation and women for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
“Birmingham has long claimed to be Britain’s city of sport, now we call upon the council’s political leaders to step out from the shadows and deliver their community this much needed facility. The West Midlands ranks bottom of the swimming provision league. It’s not surprising that swimming participation in the West Midlands also lags at the bottom of the British league table.
“It is now time for Birmingham to take decisive action.”
HYDROPOOL SEAL IDEAL HOME SHOW DEAL
i FOR FURTHER INFORMATION
Hot tub and swim spa supplier, Hydropool UK has secured the rights to become the exclusive hot tub retailer at the Ideal Home Show. Hydropool UK, in conjunction with Canadian manufacturer Hydropool, will sponsor the Ideal Gardens section of the show and will be the only exhibitor to display spas, hot tubs or swim spas at the event.
The three year agreement with a right to extend the deal beyond 2012, begins next year and is a deal with Media 10, the new organisers of the Ideal
Home Show that runs over 19 days at Earls Court.
“We believe this sponsorship will enable Hydropool to continue to raise its brand awareness throughout the UK and Europe while supporting the dealer network,” said Jonathan Bunn, Managing Director of Hydropool UK.
“Historically, having competitive brands at the same show, far from giving the consumer more choice, has resulted in negative messages and industry bad mouthing that has often meant a potential customer leaving the show
without purchasing,” Jonathan commented.
The deal is between Media 10 Ltd and Hydropool UK but also incorporates Buy Direct Ltd with exclusivity for log cabins, chalets and wooden garden buildings. Hydropool will also maximise the potential to promote complementary products such as watercare products, filters, accessories and ancillary services. Buy Direct Ltd will be sharing the stand space with Hydropool UK to form a major feature area within the Ideal Gardens section of the show.
