INDUSTRY SEES OPPORTUNITY

AS COMMERCIAL POOLS INVEST IN ‘BETTER WATER’

Andy continues: “Use of carbon

dioxide, CO2 for pH correction and the introduction of additional devices such as UV to provide improved water quality and attempt to reduce free and combined levels. Communication platforms are available to link into PC’s and BMS (Building

P

Management Systems) traditional chart recording devices are now replaced with computer compatible software packages which record all values / alarms and can produce graphical presentation of values over varying lengths of time. Communication can even be via SMS text to and from a mobile phone.”

ublic swimming pools often come in for major criticism from users. Chilly, smelly and

unwelcoming top the list of complaints. But, the times they are a changing and there are some outstanding public pool facilities available throughout the UK, but there are also watertight commercial opportunities to be had by pool companies who recognise that public pools can be transformed from disaster to desirable by providing a combination of expert advice and contemporary operating equipment. Commercial pools are now realising that getting their water treatment right can deal with one of the public’s main causes of complaint.

Complete Pool Controls provide a range of equipment that includes the Pool Supervision 100 amperometric chlorine and pH controller with the Granudos range of granular and tablet feeders, dosing pumps and day/bund tanks. CPC’s Andy Page says the prime consideration is they actually realise the value of auto control saying. “I would recommend moving towards amperometric being the direct measurement of free residual disinfectant as opposed to redox measurement. Improved control outputs to the dosing devices i.e. dosing pumps. This enhancement gives better control and increased accuracy.”

Certikin supply Accu-Tab, as a chlorine dosing product that can be used in conjunction with the Etatron automated dosing system also supplied by Certikin. CertiChem Product Manager Mark Rowlands said. “Aspects that I consider to be major steps forward in commercial pool water treatment are the increased use of automated dosing systems to monitor and regulate disinfection and pH levels as recommended by PWTAG and SPATA.”

Mark added: “Any equipment or chemicals used should be backed up by good management including but not limited to: health and safety considerations such as risk assessments; maintenance and servicing of equipment; a rigorous water testing procedure and record keeping. Most importantly these will help keep the water safe and promote a better environment for bathers to enjoy their leisure and also be secure in the knowledge the pool or spa is being well managed which of

course they have every right to expect and should be assured of. Already well known for their HTH Professional Controller, Arch Water Products are saving commercial pool energy with their futuristic IWEMS – Integrated Water and Energy Management System – which continuously monitors all aspects of water quality that are affected by bathing load and pump speed. The data is evaluated every few minutes and used to adjust the pump speed to the optimum value, ensuring high quality water using the minimum of energy consumption. IWEMS also adjusts the rate of dosing to ensure water quality parameters are constantly met.

Brian Tyler of Arch says: “This is the first system available to automatically regulate pump speeds to take account of the actual number of bathers in the pool. Trials have shown potential savings up to 50% of electrical energy together with 30% of chemical costs.”

Available from Golden Coast, the ‘Autodos 2000’ range of automatic chemical dosing control systems for commercial swimming pools, spas and water features in the commercial environment, has an enviable track record of reliability. The system is fully automatic and uses advanced microprocessor and solid-state electronics to constantly display ‘real-time’ chlorine and pH values clearly on LED displays. With two separate channels for controlling pH and free chlorine or redox control, the system is easy to calibrate and to set-up to activate automatic dosing against pre-set values. Sweden, there are more than 30 different ‘off-the-shelf’ Autodos models for the automatic dosing and control of calcium

hypochlorite, sodium hypochlorite, bromine and chlorine for almost any size or type of pool or spa. The units can be supplied as individual components or board-mounted and pre-plumbed, with all electrical connections and sensors in place, ready to be installed. In addition, Golden Coast can custom-design a unit to meet the specific needs of a particular facility. spn
