The days of one round harsh white light set in the centre of the wall at the deep-end are long gone and pool owners in both the domestic and commercial markets are putting a lot of thought into how the pool should be lit and implementing brilliant cutting edge lighting techniques to create a pool as a stunning focal point that really does trip the light fantastic. LED and fibre optic are the smart choices for swimming pool and out door illumination and the differences between the two systems are easily explained. LED (Light Emitting Diode) represents the forefront of lighting technology and operate on a totally different concept to that of traditional incandescent style lights. Instead of using a brittle metal filament that is extremely susceptible to shock and vibration, LEDs are solid-state devices with no moving parts and utilise an electronic chip that is encapsulated in an epoxy substrate. Total internal reflection allows optical fibres to retain the light they carry and occurs when light strikes the boundary between substances at an angle greater than the critical angle. Fibre optics make use of conditions where all the light encountering the surface between two materials is reflected. Light can travel for long distances through fibre optic cables reflecting off the cable’s inner walls, even when the cable is bent. Although a fibre optic cable is transparent, almost no light escapes from it. This form of lighting can be used in areas that are difficult to service and because the illuminator (light source) is remote and can deliver multiple lighting options the system is ideal for design purposes.
