“Here in the UK, we seem to be way behind in adopting free to run technologies that can reduce the pressure on our wallets!”

Monomer. These constituents are synthesised to produce a product that exhibits a high degree of ozone, ultraviolet, weathering and abrasion resisting qualities together with outstanding low temperature flexibility. EPDM is one of the most sustainable and environmentally gentle materials used in the industry today. The filtered pool water passes through the EPDM solar matting and is warmed by the sun’s rays.
Poolsolar can be installed almost anywhere and the only rule of thumb is that it must be south facing to ensure maximum heat absorption and retention. The installation manual supplied with the kit covers everything customers need to know if they want to install Poolsolar themselves. The system comes in two sizes (4m² and 5m²) and is supplied neatly packaged in a single box. Golden Coast is leading the drive to promote alternative energy helping users to save money and help the environment. Always modern in their approach, Golden Coast’s own ‘Sunburst’ solar energy system is proving to be one of the most efficient ways to heat swimming pools.
Manufactured in the UK, ‘Sunburst’ uses evacuated solar tube collector technology, the insulating efficiency of which creates a vacuum around the internal copper heat pipe. This can result in temperatures of up to 250°C being reached inside the copper pipe, far more than traditional black solar panels. Golden Coast are offering packages that meet Solar Key Mark standards for evacuated tube collectors. Shaun Adams says: “I believe part of the reason why solar has been so slow in acceptance here is because the UK has been blessed with cheap fossil fuels. However, things are changing with North Sea reserves running out so we are having to look at renewable alternatives.
GOVERNMENT SCHEME HELPS OFFSET COSTS
East Green Energy know a thing or two about renewable energy and say that air source heat pumps are an efficient way of heating a swimming pool but still need electricity to run them. East Green’s solar PV panels on a south facing roof of the pool room or roof of a house itself will offset the cost of the pool heating.
The Government recently announced feed in tariffs for electricity generation which are much better than expected and for a retrofit system of less than 4kWp 41.3p/kWh will be paid for every unit generated by the PV system (regardless of whether it is used in the home or exported to the national grid) payable for 25 years and this will not be taxable income!
East Green can supply a 10 panel system of 1.8wp that would give an annual generation of 1440kWh and provide the homeowner with an income of £590 from the feed in tariff as well as reducing the electricity bill by approx £144 per year. A system of this size would typically cost approx £10,000 when fully installed by an MCS approved installer. This would pay itself off within 10 years and continue to pay the feed in tariff for a total of 25 years.

Solar thermal heating using evacuated tube technology offers an effective means to provide a primary source of heat for out door pools in the summer season. They are not affected by the chilling effect of wind and continue to contribute heat to a pool during days where the sky is not necessarily clear blue. Performance efficiency means that subject to correct sizing etc., a pool can readily reach the mid 20s with higher temperatures possible without needing any fossil fuel back up. People are gradually coming round to understanding they cannot necessarily keep on adding to the global warming scenario. Another factor for sluggish solar growth is that we have been slow to develop an ecological conscience. That sounds good doesn’t it? But it is true; a driver to adopt this technology is also coming from wanting to be seen to be green. Something our European neighbours have been much quicker to accept. Sussex based Riomay have 30 years of solar heating and renewable energy experience behind them and are one of the UK’s leading suppliers of solar panels. Simple and effective, Riomay’s accredited solar thermal system, the Ecotube is supported by Government grants and business tax breaks. Tony Book, Riomay’s Executive Director is the man behind the development of the Ecotube. He is a recognised world expert on renewable energy and in 2007 he became Chair of the International Solar Energy Society (UK-ISES).
