TRENDS IN POOL FINISHES

www.swimmingpoolnews.co.uk

• Mosaics now have more competition with new generation finishes such as pebble finishing

at the high end of the new pool market. A lot of the ideas come from clients but the ceramics offer such a variety of options that our designers can create almost any image and style. It is a very versatile system which aids creativity,” said a spokesman.

• Ceramic art studios and specialists are still focusing on the high-end pool markets with beautiful, handmade tiles and formal designs. Middle range smaller mosaics are now popular as pre made designs

• Local authority pools closures due to tile damage have been running at record levels – so owners are demanding a more resilient finish with pool tiles. • Smaller tiles are back in fashion.

The company has been keen to offer some options lower down in the market and an 8ft designed dolphin format has been aimed to appeal to pool owners with a smaller budget. Many designs mix glass, stone, ceramic and porcelain tile; the assortment can create a surprisingly unified theme. A positive outcome will be a balance of scale, colour, texture and detail. The choices are endless, but the critical factor in selecting this style is the designer’s skill and knowledge of the material at hand.

Manufacturers and suppliers are responding to recent trends that have designers and pool owners seeking more original ideas artistic and improvements in tile quality and price. Adds Ian Harrison: “Don’t limit yourself to just the pool shell if you’re considering tile. Elaborate borders, edges and surrounds are all candidates for a beautiful tile project. And if you’re looking for that little something extra, think about tiled fountains and above water tile mosaics and murals for your pool area as well. Since swimming pool tiles can be glazed any colour and laid in any pattern, the design possibilities for a pool are literally endless. Imagination is the only thing standing in your way and I urge pool builders to be aware of some of the exciting options which have come on to the market within the past few year – and put them in front of their clients.”

Despite the arrival of new finishes mosaics have a significant future in the decoration and finishing of pools.

Tile mosaics can add the finishing touch to any pool and spa. Tile mosaics are being fabricated in just about any size, shape, colour and design imaginable. Designs include; fish, shells, reef scenes, dolphins, beach balls, turtles, cartoon characters, mermaids, sports logos and the list goes on and on. Most mosaics are now available with a shadow design. The shadow design allows the mosaics to appear more realistic in the water and is a great option to consider. Tile mosaics are available from a variety of manufactures, some using small pieces of tile to others which use much larger tile pieces. Mosaics can be installed on the floor of the pool and also on the side walls of the pool. Small items can also be installed on steps and benches but one must use caution when installing mosaics in these locations that the items will not be slippery when people are entering or exiting the pool or spa. spn

SEAL OFF BEFORE REFURBISHING SAYS UPS

The importance of sealing off of all doorways and laying floor protection to access points to the working area before refurbishment works starts on a pool was highlighted when Underwater Pool Services were contacted by Nottingham City Council to refurbish the swimming pool tank and the main and small pool surrounds at John Carroll Leisure Centre. Nottingham City Council required re- tiling works of the pool surrounds and the small pool to include modification of the small pool tank to achieve the correct water level thereby improving the circulation and filtration.

UPS Ltd said: “Within our quotation for the areas of refurbishment to the pool surrounds and the small pool, we clearly identified the extensive and expensive wood cladding system within the roof space and the walls of the pool hall which would require protection to these areas during the re-tiling and screeding works to prevent dust contamination and to eliminate deep cleaning of the site upon completion of the works.

“In addition to the above, protection would be required to the main swimming pool perimeter tiling to eliminate damage or dust/debris caused during the project.

“This kind of protection is sometimes overlooked by contracts leaving the client with a deep cleaning requirement at the end of the works. UPS endeavour at all times to eliminate this problem by applying the correct protection before any refurbishment works commence.”
