GardenBuildings APR 2010 SPN

Planning permission for pool buildings is not always required and with the more flexible Permitted Development Rights most enclosures can be erected without a Planning Inspector in sight! The starting points of the guidelines are that basically the enclosure or pool house must: • Not exceed (i) 4 metres in the case of a building with a dual-pitched roof, (ii) 2.5 metres in the case of a building, enclosure or container within 2 metres of the boundary of the curtilage of the dwellinghouse, or (iii) 3 metres in any other case

• Be no bigger than 50% of the total area of the curtilage

• Be single storey • Have no part of the building, enclosure, pool or container situated on land forward of a wall forming the principal elevation of the original dwellinghouse

• Not be situated within the curtilage of a listed building

• Not have verandas, balconies or raised platforms.

Within the curtilage of listed buildings any outbuilding will require planning permission. These are just some of the requirements and a full list can be obtained from

The Vermont from Timberline – a specially adapted building suitable for pools and swim spas

cost of having the pool removed and buying the soil to refill the hole, they could have had a custom built pool enclosure which will enhance their home. A new ‘room’ for entertaining and an area which is available for relaxation for all the family. Even if the style of the pool is not to the new homeowner’s liking, with the skill and materials that are available within the industry changes could quickly be made and with an enclosure too the picture would be complete. The possibilities are endless. You gain a new ‘room’ for the garden without the need for builders and the mess that usually goes hand in hand.

Many types of swimming pool enclosures are available and English Heritage Buildings are made from finest quality green oak to allow you to enjoy your pool all year round. Combining traditional carpentry skills with modern production techniques, the structures are incredibly strong allowing for light filled spaces which are extremely durable and will withstand all weather conditions for generations to come.

Each building is bespoke and designed to fit the size and shape of your pool perfectly. SCP Leisure entered the UK pool market 12 years ago and has developed a business distributing top branded pools and spas. The company moved in to the garden building market quite recently as it looked to offer hot tub buyers log cabins and gazebos to go alongside their purchase. The move has been a big success story. The SCP range comes from Germany and carries full TUV certification. The wood used to build the range offer tight grains, ideal to prevent splitting when it comes to log cabins and garden rooms. SCP prides itself in being able to stay ahead of High St brands offering wooden self build products with staff training and a full back up service. Although some of the SCP range is generally seen as self-build some units do require more effort to construct and a specialist carpenter is needed. Again SCP has been carrying out training seminars for companies who see the wooden building market as a sales opportunity. Sunsoka cabins from SP Leisure are individually produced meaning each cabin can be tailor made the cabin to ‘exact’

requirements making them suitable for a variety of uses.

They offer a host of options too, including single or double glazed windows, walls of 45mm or 70mm thickness, pitched or flat roof designs and a finish that can be stained in a colour of your choice to name just a few. Perhaps most importantly though, they offer cabins produced to meet local building regulations and planning guidelines, which is important as these vary from region to region. Their cabins can be self build or professionally installed – the choice is yours. If you go down the self build route, it is reassuring to know that should you require any help, one of their technicians is just a phone call away.

All Sunsoka cabins are manufactured using the latest high-tech design techniques to ensure durable, long-lasting products and the range offers total weatherproof comfort and warmth.

All cabins come complete with all fixtures and fittings and are delivered direct. Timberline’s ‘sister’ company Timberlodge supply a wide variety of structures suitable for both hot tubs and pools and each product is designed to blend with a natural garden setting. The ability to remove doors and windows either temporarily or seasonally is the ultimate in versatility and makes them suitable for all the seasonal weather in the UK. Their most suitable building in their range for pools is the rectangular Vermont but a version that has been adapted from their standard building to a pool and swim spa application by raising the internal floor height and providing floor to ceiling glazing. These adaptations provide a building that is attractive to

look at from the outside, but airy, spacious and "part of the garden" from the inside. Midlands garden and landscaping timber specialist M&M Timber Ltd set out on a year long

programme of new product launches which has put the

Worcester company amongst the market leaders. Latest is a covered seating feature for that special place in the garden, together with some surprise new entries that will be kept under wraps until the exhibition opens. Earlier this year M&M Timber launched the Sundowner Bar, a must for anyone with a taste for sophisticated al fresco entertaining specially alongside a pool. It makes an ideal centrepiece as a temporary bar for barbecue areas, poolside or outdoor events. spn
