Stainless steel structures are increasingly being used for rehabilitation/therapeutic swimming pools as in the case of this Steela pool
and cryogenic toughness. These include nickel, molybdenum, titanium and copper. Mike Wallace of stainless steel pool manufacturers Westfront Pools has been fabricating and advocating stainless steel solutions for pools and spas for many years and still talks passionately about the material. “The fact that stainless steel does not corrode and is unaffected by chlorine and other chemicals is just one very good reason but there are many others. Our swimming and hydrotherapy pools and spas are constructed of 304L and 316L grade stainless steel, making them highly durable and light weight,” enthused Wallace and went on to say. “Stainless steel is the ideal choice where accessibility is limited, for example in existing buildings and perfect for a job such as
Beetham Tower in Manchester where we installed a 4.7m x 3.5m swim spa, with an infinity edge in the penthouse suit. Beetham Tower is a prestigious development of private apartments situated above the Hilton Hotel. We believe this spa to be the highest in Europe. Westfront have more recently been working on the installation of a stainless steel pool in a Grade II listed building in London. “The specifications were that the pool wasn’t allowed to touch the fabric of the building. This caused weight issues so the pool has had to be suspended on a metal frame. There are lots of applications where stainless steel is the only option.
“The pool is on the 47th floor with the only access available being via a small personnel lift. The severely restricted access clearly
meant that the use of any other type of swim spa was impossible. Due to concerns over noise from the swim jet, the pool and structure were suspended on acoustic materials. Everything was erected on site without the need for excavation works.” The centre of the UK stainless steel industry is located just north of Nottingham. In this area you can find much of the craftsmanship and expertise necessary for stainless steel production.
