GOAL SETTING WILL DRIVE YOUR BUSINESS TO SUCCESS

IN THE FIRST OF A SERIES FOCUSING ON OUTSIDE SUPPORTING COMPANIES TO THE POOL AND SPA TRADE WE GET ADVICE FROM DAVE GAMMON WHO HELPS BUSINESSES MAKE MORE MONEY AND ACHIEVE THEIR GOALS AND DREAMS. HIS COACHING SKILLS DRIVE PROFIT IMPROVEMENT IN THE KEY AREAS OF SALES, MARKETING, TEAM BUILDING, SYSTEMS AND CUSTOMER SERVICE

I

am lucky enough to count SPATA and BISHTA members within the ranks of my client list. In the last year I presented at a regional SPATA meeting and held a sales workshop for BISHTA and SPATA members. If you could bottle and sell some of the passion for business I have found in this industry then you would find me at the front of the queue, buying in bulk. Perhaps it’s the pleasure that your products bring to your customers that keeps the industry so alive? I love working with business owners who really care about their customers and providing the very best service they can. It’s the reason I became a business coach.

I help businesses put in place the strategies, systems and practices that will propel profit growth and create a business capable of sustaining it. Just like a sports coach I achieve this by getting you to set goals, teaching you new ideas and techniques, holding you to account for doing the things you commit to, encouraging you and kicking you up the backside when required.

So here are six principles to help you perform a mini audit of where you are. Have fun with them and write down any ideas you get straight away.

PRINCIPLE 1: You can get more return from your business with less work.

Creating more profit in a business is not just about putting more hours in. It is about focus and spending more of your time planning, designing and managing the business (we call this “on” the business activity rather than “in” the business) instead of shovelling coal in the engine room!

QUESTION: How many hours a week do you spend working “on” your business and how well do you use that time?

PRINCIPLE 2: There is more profit to be generated from the business you already have.

Every business I have worked with has untapped profit opportunities. These “diamonds in the sand” are generally just sat there waiting to be collected and you will already know what some of them are. There are a myriad of profit strategies to generate leads, improve selling, keep customers spending and control business costs so your profit line grows.

QUESTION: What profit diamonds are you missing? What action do you need to take to exploit them?

PRINCIPLE 3: Your team can be developed to run the business without you.

With the right training, systems and organisation your team can run and grow the business without you having to interfere. All you do is develop a structure and engage them in where your business is going. The tough news is that it takes discipline and commitment to do it.

QUESTION: What have you done to empower and release the full potential of your team?

PRINCIPLE 4: Running your business now should be just as exciting now as the day you started.

Have you been running the same business for years, or rather living the same year over and over again? Feeling a bit battle weary and dare I say it bored? Well I am afraid to say that the performance of your business and your team is a reflection of one thing... YOU. Get yourself back in a growth mindset, reconnect with your initial vision, set some new goals and targets, move on to some exciting new strategies and then watch what happens to your interest levels.

QUESTION: How is your current mindset and attitude helping your business to prosper?

PRINCIPLE 5: Most people are capable of achieving far more than they actually do... even when they think they are flat out.

When you have two days left before you go on holiday how much activity do you get through? If you always operated at that pace where would your business be right now? Research has shown that people generally operate at around 40% of their full potential in normal situations.

QUESTION: Being honest with yourself if you really went for it, how much more do you have in the tank than you currently use? How effective are you in managing your time?

PRINCIPLE 6: Having someone to help is a strength not a weakness.

Have you ever seen a professional athlete without a coach? Why is that different in the complex world of business? The truth is it isn’t. Successful entrepreneurs have known the power of coaching and mentoring for years. The world is changing and your customers have more information, choice and means of securing products and services than ever before. How valuable will your knowledge of what works in your business be in three, five or ten years time? Having someone to brainstorm, formulate and test ideas with is a necessity in today’s world.
