SPN APR 2010 SaunasSteam&Wetrooms

aren’t too expensive, they take up much less space than people imagine and add great value to either a business or a home. The health benefits of saunas and steam rooms as part of the whole wet leisure experience is really what is persuading people to invest . Some would rather spend their money this way than say a hot tub or swimming pool. It’s an interesting change of attitude.” Adrian Glover, of Viking Saunas Ltd, dispels the rumour that installing a sauna can be hard work.

“A sauna doesn’t have to be sited on a ground floor or even indoors! Being just pure heat, it does not require drainage or plumbing or a special external venting facility, just a power source. As long as it can be accessed easily and meets DDA and Health and Safety requirements bespoke models can go virtually anywhere.

“Even the smaller pools and clubs are able to enhance overall offer due to the adaptability of a bespoke solution. As long there is enough height, there is a shower facility in close proximity and access is still via the changing room, for health and hygiene reasons, any previously wasted space can be working more.

You also need to address the issue of look and feel. For commercial installations, location is of course also governed by how large the sauna needs to be and whether mixed usage is required. Where there is a membership base, such as in health clubs, the size can generally be established by assessing percentage usage at any one time against number of members. We generally recommend that a minimum of 500mm of bench length is allocated per person. At home, indoor swimming pools can quite often be enhanced with a neat two person sauna which can be built to fit snugly in a corner of the pool deck. If there isn’t the room indoors, go outdoors where you can have either a sauna cabin or adapt an existing outbuilding, where all you need is a paved or concrete flat surface and an electricity supply and with running costs starting from as little as 30-35 pence an hour, it is a most affordable touch of luxury.

Many see the market as just starting to mature. From being on the edges of the specialist wet leisure trade these products are now mainstream. Technology will continue to offer new options but it is the luxury factor which is seducing consumers and business in a way few could have imaging 10 years ago. spn
