One of Birmingham’s busiest swimming pools is to shut for nearly two years.

It is not scheduled to re- open until December 2011. The £12m refurbishment will see the 60-year-old building completely demolished and replaced by a new 25 metre pool, a smaller children’s baths, a gym and aerobics studio. Edgbaston Constituency senior manager Steve Jarvis said alternative arrangements had been made for children’s swimming lessons. The pool is to be knocked down due to costly repairs.

“It’s great to see Plymouth bucking the trend in providing one of the largest leisure and swimming facilities in the UK.I think we have a perfect model,“ said a spokesman for the centre. “The loss of public pools and proper modern swimming facilities is a crucial issue for this country. I think the example being shown at Plymouth should set an example especially for holiday resorts. The funding is available and the right business plans can see top quality international style pools and water facilities properly restored in the UK,” he added. Work is scheduled to be completed in September 2011, and the centre will open to the public in late autumn. The centre is expected to have a million visitors a year – three times more than the existing pool and leisure centre.
