Pool&SpaIndustry APR 2010 SPN

– A NEW BEGINNING

Bob is unlikely to be aware of the many initiatives and actions that we have taken and which will be reported on in these pages of Swimming Pool News. I receive regular feedback from members and with the information it is possible to reshape and refocus our attention to issues that matter.

In terms of the relatively low membership numbers that Bob comments on, we will be working hard to ensure the effects of the recession do not adversely affect the numbers and we hope to increase SPATA membership beyond the current 200 members. Certainly, there was a lot of interest at SPATEX and we have been following this up. In terms of BISHTA, as consumer confidence continues to improve, we will be looking to engage with more companies that will see the benefits of joining their trade association. BISHTA is likely to have a rapid growth in its membership numbers, due to an agreement to include holiday parks as associate members and so the current 110 members will rise over the next twelve to eighteen months, as more companies seek the technical advice available from BISHTA.

Bob also queries who is actually running the various companies, and no doubt he will have his own preferred leadership style. His comments about my approach to the role of Managing Director and whether the real decisions are taken elsewhere are important to answer. It is very important for an MD to lead and take responsibility for the actions of a company. In running BISHTA, SPATA, BSPF and PIP, it is vital, where possible, that the respective Boards, Committees and Councils are actively involved in the key decision making process to achieve consensus. When you have 200 stakeholders as SPATA does, or 110 stakeholders as BISHTA currently does, it is important to get the decisions debated and agreed as they may have an adverse impact on the majority of members if not ºthought through.

In conclusion, I will be delighted to meet with business owners, such as Bob, to encourage them to (re)join SPATA or BISHTA and will always be open to feedback from non members about what reasons would encourage them to join.
