RECOVERY SIGNS IN PLACE SAYS CERTIKIN BOSS

The signs of recovery for the specialist trade are in place – that was the message from Certikin Managing Director Neil Murray speaking at the seminars. “Following a slow start to 2009 when in the first two months we were 18% down, business started to rally to the point where in October we beat sales for the

AQUA SPHERE LAUNCHES SWIM CHALLENGE FOR CANCER CHARITIES

Aqua Sphere, the innovative swim products company, is daring swimmers to test their capabilities and compete in a men versus women challenge – pitching men against women to raise funds and awareness for breast and prostate cancer. The Swim Challenge is set to run from 1 April until 30 November. Swimmers of all abilities are invited to sign on to www.swimchallenge.org each day to log their hours in the water. The Swim Challenge website will track the total times of men vs. women via a “leader meter” posted on the website and created so competitors can keep tabs on their counterparts. The site will also allow swimmers to individually track their personal progress in the pool, encouraging them to swim longer each day.

corresponding month in 2008. We ended the year just under 1% down which considering the depth of the recession was pretty impressive.”

Neil added: “Not surprisingly we are seeing resurgence in the refurbishment sector which is compensating for the market’s downturn in new builds. Liner

pools have been badly hit but I am happy to report that concrete new builds have barely been affected. The commercial market has held up well despite some major projects being delayed. He sounded a note of caution to those who may be considering commercial work to first check cash flow as many

companies are notoriously slow payers.”

Neil concluded his speech on a note of optimism for 2010. “A lot of work is beginning to come in and with the news that the UK has officially broken the cycle of recession there is a sense that we are at last on the road to recovery.”

POOL INJURY APPEAL FAILS

A caravan park firm, fined £150,000 after a boy suffered a serious brain injury when he nearly drowned in a pool, has lost a challenge against conviction. Judges at the Court of Appeal rejected an application by Upper Bay Limited.

The park owner was found guilty of failing to ensure he was not exposed to risks to his health and safety.

Chad Mole, seven, of Halesowen, was on holiday at the Trecco Bay caravan park in

Porthcawl when the incident happened in 2005. He was found in the Jacuzzi-style “bubble lounger”.

Upper Bay, which owns and operates the park – one of the largest in Europe – was found guilty by a majority verdict. The company had denied the offence over two trials at Cardiff Crown Court with the jury in the first one unable to reach a verdict. During the trial it was claimed the swimming pool was not properly manned by lifeguards.

Chad was revived but oxygen starvation left him severely disabled.

The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Judge, Mr Justice Roderick Evans and Mr Justice Griffith Williams dismissed an application by the company for leave to appeal against the June 2009 conviction. The Lord Chief Justice announced: “We have decided that there is no arguable basis for concluding that the conviction of the applicant in this case was unsafe.”

WATERCO EUROPE CRUISING TO SUCCESS

Waterco Europe are involved in different projects where its equipment is used outside of the swimming pool industry. Recently Waterco has seen its products used on various installations from penguin pools to large water treatment plants. One of the more unusual applications Waterco has just completed was the supply of eight micron bobbin wound SMD1200, 6 bar filters for two new cruise ships. The filters are used two in parallel on a skid base for the reverse osmosis desalination plant for fresh water production. The huge skid mounted plants were installed during the construction

of each ship, so effectively the ship was built around these plants. “At Waterco we are pleased to see our equipment being used in a variety of installations, it shows the

flexibility of the range, we have such a wide choice of products that we can offer a high quality solution to most requests,” said Tony Fisher, Managing Director of Waterco Europe.
