NEW PRODUCTS HELP TO LIFT

rganisers looking back on SPATEX 2010 are claiming a double success story – of a show which delivered the highest number of new products for years and provided an above budget financial return for the specialist industry. The three-day Brighton show provides funds for generic promotion of the UK’s pool and spa industry. And while there are likely to be

some tough decisions ahead for the traditional south coast exhibition, 2010 was a year when it managed to reflect an industry showing some signs of recovery after two really tough years.

Show organiser Michele Bridle said: “I think the show fulfilled its key criteria. It showcased a large number of new products, looked good, looked different, upped the game in terms of the whole show, provided the boost of a strong Saturday opening and was able to make more money for the industry than we at first felt.”

She said attendance figures didn’t reflect the business done at the show and the positive feedback from organisers. “I don’t think there has ever been a more apt description about quality visitors rather than just quantity than this year. We have heard back from a lot of exhibitors who last year said they didn’t think it was worth attending but who came and had a great show. “We can’t afford to be complacent. These have been tough years for the industry and for trade shows. Other events all around the world have felt it.

“We’ve got to go on improving. I think the numbers through the door meant that the decision to open on a Saturday was right. We were all disappointed there weren’t more consumers who attended but what can you do. It is only probably people who have a keen interest in having a pool and spa and

who are local who are likely to turn up. But in the future we need to see what more we can do to encourage serious end users. “I also think there were a lot of improvements to the operational side. The show went very smoothly.”

SPATEX NOT ALONE IN FINDING VISITOR NUMBERS TOUGH

SPATEX 2010 wasn’t alone in finding it difficult to attract visitors.

Although the overall attendance for the three day trade show was 10% up on the weather-affected 2009 event, the overall number of visitors was down on the 2,100 people who attended in 2007. Organisers have released figures showing 1,323 visitors attended in February. SPATEX isn’t alone in the trend. Piscine in Lyons in 2009 and the Barcelona show last autumn all found attracting visitors a tough task and both shows were substantially down on previous attendances.

The regional analysis of visitors at Brighton showed 60% of the visitors came from the south east although the Midlands and south west attracted strong numbers.

The biggest disappointment however was the low numbers of regular visitors – people who appear on the SPATEX database as attending the event over the past three years.
