SPN APR 2010 One-piecePools

It’s also a developing product. Production at the company’s new plant in Bratislava is flat out he says keeping up with demand.

The idea of a one-piece pool is now about 12 years old but the refinements are making the market more sophisticated. Compass’s material is completely ceramic with a fibreglass base and bi-luminate luminous, non slip surface. Selwyn is convinced the market will continue to take off.

The Starline Monoblockthe one piece pool is made from high-quality Vinylester, reinforced with a fibreglass sandwich construction

“A concrete pool can take 12 weeks to complete. You wait for the concrete to dry. You wait for the tiler to do the mosaic finish. Meanwhile the contractors can’t start another pool. Then it rains, so they’re a week behind. It rains some more. Everything gets out of kilter. One of the main selling points of the one- piece pools is that they can be installed rapidly. It’s not unusual for work to be completed in seven to 10 days. It’s also what Selwyn calls the “can’t be bothered syndrome”. “People want something which is ready, finished, done and installed quickly.” The Sundance Pools range covers a good cross section of shapes and sizes and they are generally available from stock which is ideal for trade customers to call off when required. Centrally located in Milton Keynes, the distribution for both trade and retail customers is nationwide and transport is easy to arrange.

A finished stylish Compass Pools one-piece success in the market on the back of its unique ceramic finish and the “self cleaning” facility

Appealing to most customers the attraction of the “instant pool” is ideal when the client is pressed for time and does not want to be troubled with endless site discussions. With a Sundance pool the installer can prepare a site from scratch within a couple of days to take a pool. The plumbing and plant room can then be easily fitted out within a week and, hey-presto, the pool is filled and ready for swimming! These days any hassle wastes time and money and so quick installation means the realisation of a dream becomes a reality. Dig the hole, prepare the base, drop the pool in, backfill as you fill the pool, connect the pipework for the filtration and heating back to the plant room. It really can all be done with the minimum of fuss, time and disturbance.

people to try and develop the quality of the dealers we need to make the most of the opportunity which the products offer us. “The economy is tough there’s so doubt about that but there’s also opportunities from people who are looking to put aside ideas of moving home for a while and who want a high quality immediate pool without fuss but with quality and with guarantees. The high specification is where the opportunity is,” he adds.

Compass Pools still says it has market leadership in the sector on the back of two reasons which Selwyn Mindell says are the unique ceramic finish and the “self cleaning” facility.

He says “self cleaning” has a bad name so he prefers to say it’s a pool which cleans itself. And it’s a uniqueness which has given Compass a market advantage.

“Enquiries for these pools are still coming in as they are the top end because of the self cleaning system and now with the integrated

cover we have been inundated with interest from the trade. This Rollo cover as an addition is an important development for us and one we are very excited about.

The Compass Pool Rollo Cover guarantees full safety around the pool. It prevents heat loss at night and when it is cooler, solar slats secure optimal warming of the water by solar energy and thus contribute to energy savings. Selwyn works hard to convert potential owners and contractors to the idea of buying and installing one-piece composite pools. “These pools can, if you want, come with everything complete – steps, gently sloping floor, seats, perimeter grip rails – all incorporated into the original mould.” He adds: “We can make the pools without the cleaning system but then we are just going to compete against other people. We have a 20 year osmosis warranty. Other manufactures will give you one or two years. If you a re lucky you can get a 10 year warranty but not against osmosis. So it’s a superior product.”

Sundance Pools says it has found customers amazed at the limited disruption to their lives. It is now evident that the concept of a fibreglass pool has come a long way and is here to stay. spn
